About Me

Ranaan Meyer

Is best known for his string trio: Time for Three. Recently they completed a residency at the Curtis Institute of Music. They have also done residencies at the University of Michigan, USC, and Northwood University.
In 2007, Time for Three, performed over 150 Performances all over the United States. Along with performing, Time for Three has played for Hundreds of thousands of children and young adults of all ages at the many Outreaches they have done throughout the years (over 400 out reach performances.) Aside from concertising, you can also hear their music on the soundtrack of the History Channel’s Spanish-American War Documentary, which aired in June of 2007 and on their 2 albums We Just Burned This for You and Time for Three.
In January of 2008, they premiered a Concerto co-commissioned by The Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony and Wheeling Symphony by eminent composer Jennifer Higdon. They performed this with the Philadelphia Orchestra and then again with the Wheeling Symphony in February (they will perform this with Leonard Slatkin and the Pittsburgh Symphony come December 2008 and again with the Philadelphia Orchestra to close their summer season at the Saratoga Performing Arts Series in August).Ranaan has recently started a new group that consists of piano, guitar, and bass. This group allows Meyer to focus on classical repertoire as well as his compositional fusion of ALL musical styles. This new group is perfect for educational outreach and hopes to be utilized for this purpose wherever we perform. In addition, the pianist in the group happens to be Ranaan’s mother, Norma Meyer, and the guitarist is Shawn Qaissaunee.Meyer began his musical studies at the piano at age 4; at age 11, he took up the double bass (once he was big enough to hold it). He attended the Manhattan School of Music and graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music in 2003. In the past, Ranaan would appear regularly with orchestras such as the Minnesota Symphony, Baltimore Symphony and The Philadelphia Orchestra, but Mr. Meyer has found himself increasingly in demand as a chamber musician and soloist, as well as a composer creating unique new works for his trio Time for Three as well as for solo bass and other ensembles. Most recently Mr. Meyer has been composing new material for Double Bass and Guitar. He was recently commissioned to compose and perform 8 new pieces for solo double bass. 4 of the 8 pieces are for solo bass while the other 4 are composed for bass and guitar. In addition, Ranaan has composed 2 works for Hal Robinson, the Principle Bassist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Mr. Meyer completed a Commission entitled, “My Zayda” (for Violin, Piano and Double Bass) for the Kingston Chamber Music Festival’s 18th Anniversary in Rhode Island.
Other commissions Ranaan has completed include a double bass and harp duet as well as a set of Time for Three pieces for Astral Artistic Services and a Time for Three composition for the City of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Symphony, “Of time and three rivers”. All commissions have been expedited through the American Composer’s forum. Mr. Meyer also collaborates with Nicolas Kendall and Zach De Pue to co-compose music together.
Mr. Meyer, also an accomplished jazz musician, has performed with Branford Marsalis, Jane Monheight, Victor Lewis, Jason Moran, Mark O’Connor, Ari Hoenig, Duane Eubanks, Mickey Roker and many more. Ranaan, at age 19 produced, directed and performed in the very first Washington Township Jazz Festival which was also broadcasted live on Philadelphia’s WRTI. Mr. Meyer, an avid teacher, has held adjunct Double Bass Professorships at both Princeton University and the University of Delaware. He has spent several Summers teaching alongside Hal Robinson (Principal Bass of The Philadelphia Orchestra) at the Strings International Music Festival in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and this year ran the Double Bass program. He has also taught at the Intermountain Suzuki Camp in Sandy, Utah and Mark O’Connor’s String Camp in San Diego, California.
Through all of Mr. Meyer’s teaching experience he found himself compelled to begin a Double Bass Camp of his own that launched its very fist year in June 2008. It is called Wabass and is held in Wabash, Indiana. The camp was free to the 10 elite double bass students that were accepted. For more information go to www.wabass.com
Recreationally, Ranaan Loves to play ultimate Frisbee and swim. He also likes to watch movies. But most importantly, he loves people and the music that surrounds all of us.
