'Ozark Mountain Songwriter' Billy Don Burns is one of the last remaining original Country Outlaws.
In his 30+ years as a country singer, he's practically met all of Country Music's greatest, an worked with quite a few of them: Ernest Tubb invited him on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, Billy Don's song 'California' was picked up by Willie Nelson, he recorded Merle Haggard and Johnny Paycheck. (Due to copyright issues, these recordings remain unreleased.)
In 1999, his album DESPERATE MEN (a co-release with country legend Hank Cochran) kicked Johnny Cash's UNCHAINED album off number one in the Gavin Americana Charts.
In true country music tradition, where fame and tragedy so often rest side by side, Billy Don has always been that 'one step' away from that BIG break...
About THE BERLIN TAPES: I was first introduced to Billy Don's music by his 2004 album HEROES, FRIENDS AND OTHER TROUBLED SOULS, which became my personal Album of the Year.
In the summer of 2007, I was in need of a live act for a film & music festival I produced.
I knew that he would be playing a big festival in England, so I invited Billy Don over, and he readily agreed.
The idea to THE BERLIN TAPES was born one night in a Frankfurt hotel room.
Drinking and chatting, we both tried to come up with the saddest song we could think of, and Billy Don would play some of them on his guitar.
I was absolutely amazed and so the idea to do some acoustic recordings was born.
THE BERLIN TAPES were recorded on the night of July 22, 2007 in my Berlin apartment.
The album will hit stores on May 15, 2008, advance orders will be taken on the website from April 3.
Please check back here for further details.
