David Robert Jones was born on January 8, 1947 at 40 Stansfield Road, Brixton, London. His father, Heywood Stenton Jones, is a public relations officer for Dr. Barnardos Homes and has lived with David's mother, Margret Burns, since returning from serving with the 8th Army in 1933. He has a daughter, Annette. Margret has a seven-year-old-son, Terry. Heywood Jones' divorce comes through in August and he marries David's mother on September 12. When he is eight years old, David and Terry leave poor, bombed-out Brixton for their uncle's centuries-old farmhouse in the Yorkshire countryside. They return two years later to their parents house in Plaistow Grove, Bromley, Kent David goes to Bromley Technical High School for boys. He has a fight with his friend George Underwood over a girl and is punched in the eye. He spends months in the hospital fighting for his sight. The right eye is saved, but the left is paralyzed and remains permanently dilated. Brother Terry is a big influence on young David, turning him on to jazz and beat literature like Jack Kerouac's On the Road. David buys a plastic saxophone and asks well-known jazz musician Ronnie Ross if he will teach him to play. By his mid-teens, David has mastered the instrument.Myspace Layouts
