About Me

Here are some recent shots a friend took at the Sweetwater String Band show at June Mtn during the balmy weather of January...
The live solo album that I had in the store above, is now available for free, just scroll down to the cover image and you'll find each track there available for download off my website...nobody wanted to pay I guess...I saw one purchase in over a year, so screw trying to sell music I guess, just give it away....Ol' Lucille, Folk Songs Recorded in the Back of My Truck, available for free below....
LISTEN TO SOME FREAKY CELLO MUSIC ...click for an epic 20 minute jam from 8/1/08 at the Looney Bean Patio with Old Coyote Moon
NOTES ON THE TRACKS IN THE PLAYER ABOVE::::
"My Heart is Too Easy" - the words were written over a year ago and forgotten about on my computer, and just today (8/22/09) I sat down and figured out the music for it and made this initial recording.
"Turtle Island" is an original song from years ago that I wrote in an effort to see America from the perspective of the native peoples of this country that have been robbed of their livelihood and their land. It is on the Ol' Lucille album, but this is a brand new higher quality recording with real microphones etc...and a different feel to it.
"Sweet World Blues" is an original song written about a year ago on the pacific coast of baja as a relationship deteriorated and I saw and felt a similar sensation to the world around me, as humans have trashed this earth, I found inspiration in the idea of just asking the world to pour me one more good drink, to pour it deep so that I could block out what is going on around me everyday in this crazy world.
"Liberation" is a song about the illegal invasion of Iraq, and is of course relevant to all other illegal "liberations" like china's takeover of Tibet, or America's own conquest over the Native nations of this country, or our conquest of Mexico in the 19th century.
"Travelin' to Find" is a personal story about growing up with music and then moving on to find my own way of life, before returning full circle to a serious life of music (albeit different music)...
These songs have all been recorded this winter, using garage band and some nice microphones.
There are two tracks in the player called "Scott Roberts original" and they were recently recorded late at night drinking whiskey with my friend Scott Roberts, a mandolin and guitar player who I jam with in the Sweetwater String Band. He's a great songwriter with some powerful folk and love songs, and so the two of us decided to record some simple stereo two track live recordings that night of some of his folk songs and some of mine. I've put a couple of tracks from that first session on here, and there promises to be more to come. Scott Wesley Roberts has his own MySpace page now, with more of our recordings from that night of his songs...
Also recorded with Scott Roberts that night was "One Town, Two Countries" is a song of mine written about a mexican mother's feelings and story about immigrating to this country illegally and settling in Mammoth, CA.
"Alone With My Dreams" - a brand new original song of mine multi-track recorded in February all by me, using just the built-in Apple mic, and GarageBand, and the three instruments that I know how to play....
"Change the Tide" - an original song by Andy Roberts, (not related to Scott), banjo player for The Trespassers, recorded live at his home in the hills above Mariposa, listen for the crickets in the background...
....made live in the back of my '84 FJ60 Toyota Landcruiser...
...these links will open a new page or tab and take you out of MySpace, so just click through the warning page and they'll start playing....
1. Turtle Island - 7:41
2. Dreams - 8:00
3. One Town, Two Countries - 5:37
4. Alone on the Road - 7:24
5. Drawing the Line - 6:11
6. Imagine - 6:07
7. Black Elk Speaks - 6:37
8. Los Angeles - 4:45
9. Los in this Canyon - 6:04
10. Old Lucille - 6:12
11. Bonus track: Tequila Song - 3:33
Please let me know what you think of the music.....and I hope to have a new multi-tracked solo home studio style album out in the next several months...Happy Listening and Downloading.....
Check out this film about the three beautiful winters I lived (with Mariah Moon for two of them) snowed-in down at Red's Meadow, near Devil's Postpile, CA, set to my original song "Imagine", with acoustic guitar, slide, and cello, and vocal harmony all done by myself thanks to the technology of multi-track software and new fangled computers.....some sweet backcountry skiing and snowboarding too...check it out!
check out my photography, film and other writings at Back of Beyond .
Current Catalog of Solo Work
I'm currently working on some new recordings to post here.
Momma, Momma this song is about my mother and her amazing ability to handle the struggle of Multiple Sclerosis......
I hope to perform more and more of my originals, political or otherwise, this winter and will hopefully have some better recordings to present soon...
Might as well throw out there that I'm very interested in becoming a free lance cello player both for live tours or for studio work. I'm capable and interested in playing all styles of music.

And when we're busy just plain drinking ourselves to death,
Scott Roberts and I get together and record folk music...which you'll currently find a bit of in the player, and on his myspace....just cello and guitar, or guitar and mandolin depending on who's singing...we're going to start doing more of this music and less of the drinking ourselves to death (hopefully)....

And I occasionally get to perform with Andy Roberts (of the Trespassers) and Matt Tyrell in a little band called The Hollow Log Jubilee...
Influences: my main influence of course is being out in the wild, around a campfire (this one home made with dry stacked stone complete with bench seat and backrests, all carried by hand from the location and placed in a sweet spot in the coastal hills of Baja Norte, Mexico) living as real an existence as I can, as free of work, and free of the usual distractions and confusions we place on modern life...my main influence is freedom and living to tell a good story....

townes van zandt, woody guthrie (and Arlo and Sara Lee), bob dylan, jerry garcia and the grateful dead (especially w/ "Pigpen" 60s and early 70s) , neil young, U2, van morrison, otis redding, charles ives (songs), joan baez, phil ochs, donovan, john denver, harvey reid, todd snider, joe craven, mike marshall and darol anger, blind melon (w/shannon hoon..r.i.p.), kurt cobain / nirvana, eddie vedder / pearl jam, noel gallagher of Oasis (look up the song Cast No Shadow), sonic youth, tori amos, ben harper, david lindley, utah phillips, ani difranco, peter - paul - and mary, KEARTH 101, Crosby Stills Nash and Young....etc etc i'll add more later as i think...

I borrow a lot in my cello playing from years of classical music, favorites there would be Elgar (cello concerto), Brahms (sonata in e minor), and Bach's cello suites......and now, more recently I am falling in love with old time bluegrass and fiddle tunes....

(...Oh! and hey Schatten pickups rock for any of you out there wanting to know....they're handmade in Canada and I feel like it really does capture the true acoustic tone of my sweet cello, and their preamp DI boxes are great too, allowing me to add to my acoustic tone for more bass for plucking out bass lines if i want....)
