Queerstock

About Me

I edited my profile with Thomas’ Myspace Editor V3.6 !
1995 - The first Queerstock was held in Philadelphia, PA June 3, 1995 in Judy Garland Park as an alternative to Pride events. The activist group Grassroots Queers illegally took over the park and held an all day artist festival with a sound system run on batteries, the threat of rain and possible arrest for trespassing.
1996 - Queerstock performer Doria Roberts relocated to Atlanta and began to introduce Queerstock to the Southeast by holding a fundraising concert to help with production.
1997 - During the summer of 1997, the second official Queerstock Festival was held in Atlanta, GA. Two nights of performances from eleven local and visiting musicians.
1998 - The festival expanded into a tour touching down in neighboring Durham, NC. A total of six nights, six venues and thirty five performers in both Atlanta and Durham with music ranging from rap to punk.
1999 - After kicking off in Atlanta, Queerstock returned to the Northeast with three shows in Boston and two nights New York City. Fans traveled from Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Connecticut, New Jersey and Maryland to witness some of the most provocative Queerstock performances to date.
2000 - The 5th Anniversary boasted a five city tour stopping in Atlanta, Boston, New York, Chicago and hometown Philadelphia.
2001 - While taking a hiatus from producing Queerstock, organizer Doria Roberts decided to release a compilation entitled “Queer Stock, Queer Soup” that would benefit queer youth advocacy agencies around the country. The CD was originally set for release on National Coming Out Day, October 11, 2001. Sadly, September 11 events prompted Roberts to postpone the release of the disc.
2002 – “Queer Stock, Queer Soup” CD released.
2003 – The Queerstock Tour & Festival returns with first time shows on the West Coast, Northwest and Southwest benefiting SMYRC in Portland, OR and Wingspan in Tucson, AZ and several queer youth advocacy agencies.
2004 - Queerstock benefits Boston Glass Youth Center and visits Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME with new artists Tim'm West, Daniel Cartier, Keyth Lawrence and the Purple Circle, Secret Cock, Arjuna Greist and returning alum poet/playwright Letta Neely.
2005 – 10th Anniversary! Queerstock plays Atlanta Pride in June and is broadcast live on Q TV. Artists Anthony Antoine, Lucas Mire, Manifest Frequency, Basil Hennely, Butterfly Stitch and Angela Motter shared the stage. Plans are in th works for 10th anniversary show and party during the Creating Change Conference in Oakland, CA in November. Stay tuned...
