Four Before Five Records began with a purpose similar to that of most other independent labels: to connect the music of talented artists with the ears of music lovers alike. But like anything else, the idea, the concept, the notion was heavily reliant on “something.†Fast forward days, weeks, months, a year or so to a day and a place and a face we’d never seen before. Enter us at a late summer of 2006 party. We mingle, we drink, we stroll through; we stop. Needless to say, we are always looking for that “something.†Sitting on a wooden chair in the corner of a small room, a young man reaches forward to unbuckle an acoustic guitar case. He slowly pulls it out – calm to the touch; like Frodo putting on the ring. With a small crowd gathering at this point I nonchalantly ask the girl next to me “Is he good?†She says, “Very.†He smiles and laughs to the tune of friendly jokes around him. He offers, “cover or original?†The small crowd replies, it’s unanimous; an original. Breaking the silence his fingers tip toe into a pleasing intro and he sings. We hear about these “right place at the right time†moments where great things just happen “out of the blue†and we question their existence. Well here we stood with our unicorn sitting in the room of a second floor apartment just outside of Boston and we weren’t about to let it slip away.
