About the Capeverdean Creole Institute

The Capeverdean Creole Institute (CCI), founded in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, in 1996, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of the Capeverdean language. Promotion of the Capeverdean language focuses on active support for the recognition of Capeverdean Creole as an official language in the Republic of Cape Verde, the implementation of a standardized orthography (ALUPEC), and curriculum development in Capeverdean bilingual programs in the US and abroad. The activities of the Capeverdean Creole Institute include offering Capeverdean language courses to local community members and others interested in the language and culture of Cape Verde, providing translation and interpretation services, maintaining a library of literature, poetry, and publications in and about Capeverdean Creole, and providing cultural and language resources to interested parties.
The current CCI Board Members are proactive in a number of initiatives that promote greater visibility of the Capeverdean language. These initiatives range from developing classroom materials for elementary schools to organizing local and regional conferences and cultural events. In addition, members of CCI have actively contributed to the Capeverdean cultural exhibitions and programs around the world. Members of this group also regularly present papers on the Capeverdean language and educational issues at national and international academic conferences. Furthermore, educational endeavors have included teaching the Capeverdean language at area universities and establishing the first Capeverdean bilingual program. The CCI aims to maintain ongoing conversations on all aspects of the Capeverdean language and culture around the world.
