A meal at any of these four restaurants will beat cereal or toast from your own kitchen any day.Mendez Café, 201 Bartholomew Ave., 923-6603: For 23 years, Delores Mendez and her husband have been serving up some of the best breakfasts in the South Side, according to customers.From the breakfast tacos wrapped in homemade tortillas to the Huevas Mexicanas, one won’t leave hungry.The staff at the Mendez Café caters to their customers with the motto “whatever they like,” changing orders to personal tastes or whipping up items on requests.The most popular dishes are breakfast tacos, huevos rancheros and even pancakes and omelets. All the food is made fresh daily, with Mendez mixing the flour and lard for the tortillas herself. The café even serves Mexican staples such as lengua and carne asada.“Our restaurant is like family,” Mendez said. “It’s like being at home. The customers are your family. They’ll stay, read a book and mingle. It’s a friendly atmosphere.”
