The Dishevelled Gentlemen debut album is available now through iTunes and CD Baby. The album has been recorded, and mixed by Tim Johnston who has worked with Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Even, The Waifs, Radio Birdman, and the Beasts of Bourbon to name just a few. The recording has been tracked to 2 inch tape and mixed on a classic SSL desk. The Gents have also been lucky enough to involve some fantastic local Melbourne talent on the recording, including Lilith Lane, Ben Timmis (Littlestar, Silvernight Drive), Jen Anderson & Paul Thomas (Weddings, Parties, Anything), Jeff Hooker (The Dirty Skirts), and Quincy McLean (Blue Ruin)
................................ ................................ ........................... .............................. ............................... ................................ ............................... ........................ .... ..... ......Making the Album
The initial bed tracks for 'were recorded in October of 2007 at Newmarket Studios and the vocals shortly after at Bakehouse Studios. The Band were in good form and got down 12 songs in two days. Although they were 14 hour days. All the bed tracks remained in the final mixes. From that point the recording continued in small sessions throughout 2008 and early 2009 with the process mostly held up by trying to book people in around busy lives and studio times. However throughout that time some great musicians lent their talents to the album. Jen Anderson (Weddings Parties Anything) played violin on two of the more folk songs 'How we arrived' & 'Freewill'. The outro solo in freewill shows just how talented Jen is with a rollicking, foot stomping, piece of fiddle work. Lilith Lane sang backing vocals on five tracks including a haunting Kate Bush like operatic backing in the rocking 'Call Your Name' and was joined in that song by 'Blue Ruin' frontman and songwriter Quincy McLean. Quincy also sang with Lilith on the rocking blues number 'Bus Stop' that falls somewhere between 'Aerosmith' and John Lee Hooker. Paul Thomas (Weddings Parties Anything) plays Pedal Steel on several tracks including one of the stand out numbers 'One More Time', a country folk song with a rockin' chorus again featuring Lilith Lane's Backing Vocals. Jeff Hooker (James McCann's Dirty Skirt Band) added some extra guitar bite on the album, getting his unique sound by playing at crunchingly loud volumes that had the studio walls shaking. To round off the list of guest musicians the fantastic Anthony 'Tok' Norris and Paul Williams to play horns on 'Bus Stop' and 'New Faces'. It was a real thrill for the band to be able to use a real horn section on the record and it makes a huge difference. When the horns let go at the end of 'Bus Stop' it is exciting stuff. The final mix session saw Tim work his magic on a classic SSL desk at Melbourne's Studio 1. After 6 days totalling 80 + hours of mixing 'Calling in Favours' was finished. The process was a long one but also a very rewarding one for the band. The original vision for the album has been fully realised.
