Inspired by Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream, Manal was formed around 1968, under the name of Ricota. Javier MartÃnez have been previously the drummer of psychedellic band El Grupo de Gastón, and Alejandro Medina was a member of beat combo The Seasons ("Liverpool at B.A." 1966). In 1968 they sign with independent label Mandioca and released their first single: "Que pena me das!/Para ser un hombre más". By mid-1969 another single was released, "No pibe/Necesito un amor" and by the end of the year the first LP was released. With his cranky and soulful voice MartÃnez sang the blues in spanish, with very mature angry-young man lyrics. Musically it´s remarkable the influence of jazz, tango and milonga, mixed with blues and long psych jamming. A classic, and very influential record. Around this time they were featured in the movie "Tiro de gracia", with the song "Estoy en el infierno", never released in any format. In 1970 they release the second LP, "El león" and split. In the seventies Gabis and Medina played with La Pesada and released solo records. By 1981, Manal reunited, releasing the "Reunión" LP with new songs and a live album. In 1995 they reunited again, and another live album was released.
