About Me

Michael Bean is a multi-instumentalist from the Boston area. Originally a bass player (hence the nickname 'Beanbass'), Michael focuses on stringed instruments such as dobro, mandolin, guitar, bass, banjo, lap steel, dulcimer, and a recent wrestling match with a fiddle.Michael has recorded with Northern Lights guitarist Bill Henry on his "Red Sky" cd, playing bass behind the fiddle of Tim O'Brien. The disc also features Vassar Clements, Sam Bush, Taylor & Jake Armerding.In his electric music days, Michael played and recorded rock, funk, jazz, and blues with a variety of well-known local, national, and international players.Some highlights: Recorded Vinnie Moore's highly acclaimed disc "Time Odyssey", which also featured Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater, Dixie Dregs)Recorded Flexi-Disc for Modern Drummer Magazine featuring Jonathan Mover (Joe Satriani, Alice Cooper, GTR, Aretha Franklin)Performed with: Drum legend Carmine Appice (Jeff Beck, Vanilla Fudge, Rod Stewart) Vinnie Appice (Dio, Black Sabbath) Richie Kotzen (Poison) Blues Saraceno (Jack Bruce/Ginger Baker, Poison) Joe Franco (Leslie West, Twisted Sister)Played and recorded jazz-funk-fusion with Future Reference featuring Frank Vardaros (Maynard Ferguson, Arturo Sandoval)Played bass with Boston Music Awards Nominee Boston Baked Blues.Michael's recent music can be described as progressive instrumental music played with traditional bluegrass instrumentation.

Band Members: On these tunes I played dobro, mandolin, guitar, banjo, lap steel guitar, dulcimer, & bass.I play with a few different bands: I play dobro with Merrimac Valley Rounders (aka Windrush Bluegrass); lapsteel with Saltgrass (country); electric guitar with Paws Up (blues, funk, & rock); acoustic guitar, dobro, & mandolin with Paws Up Duo (blues, roots rock).
Influences: Beatles, Vaughn Bean, Charlie Parker, Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Chris Thile, Rob Ickes, Steve Morse, Beethoven, Jaco Pastorius, Leonard Bernstein, Duane Allman/Dickey Betts, Keith Emerson, Ian Anderson, JS Bach, Lowell George, BB King, Aaron Copland, GF Handel, James Jamerson, everybody in the 60's and early 70's.
