About Me

WE'VE MADE IT TO SXSW!
"16 Magazine and the Birth of Rock Journalism" is the name of the panel featured at SXSW this year, on Saturday March 15.
Panelists will include SUSAN COWSILL of the Cowsills, TAYLOR HANSEN from Hansen, one-time 16 editor DANNY FIELDS, Creem Magazine writer JAAN UHELZSKI, Austin Chronicle writer (and 16's MySpace page creator) MARGARET MOSER. Susan and Margaret were featured yesterday on the SXSW blog.
We'll be gathering to talk about Gloria Stavers, her long strange trip through the 50s, 60s, and 70s, and how profoundly 16 Magazine influenced the path of rock journalism.
Stay tuned!

Without GLORIA STAVERS , my world would be very different. She was the professionally underrated and culturally overlooked editor of 16 Magazine from 1957-1975 whose intelligence and vision shaped generations of girls from the late Fifties through the Eighties.
"GLORIA STAVERS and 16 Magazine basically invented rock and pop-culture journalism as we know it today," posited someone who should know, music critic emeritus Dave Marsh, in his intro to 1997's Who's Your Fave Rave?, the 40th anniversary book written by former 16 editors Randi Reisfeld and Danny Fields. What Marsh doesn't say is that Stavers basically also invented the female rock and pop-culture journalist.
As editor of 16 for nearly 20 years, Stavers shaped more musical careers than any other woman of her day. As a writer of popular culture, she was unparalleled. by the time Stavers left 16 Magazine in 1975, reading and writing about rock & roll changed forever.
Her dedication to music took us from the squeaky clean pop stars of the Fifties through the British Invasion, into the hippie era and onward through disco. She died in 1983, much too young and never receiving the respect she was due.
I would be unforgivably rude if I didn't also mention the fantastic DANNY FIELDS and wonderful RANDI REISFELD, editors with GLORIA STAVERS at 16. If you don't have a copy of the 40th anniversary book, Who's Your Fave Rave from 1997, look for it on Ebay or your local used book stores - it's well worth it!

NOTE: There is currently an Ebay copy of Who's Your Fave Rave going for a ridiculous amount unless that money is going into the authors' pockets.
