About Me

Los Angeles native David Moyer is quickly making a name for himself as a saxophonist, composer-arranger, and band leader. He is known for his infectious energy during live performance and on recordings for his robust sound, creative arrangements, and doubling prowess.Born and raised in Los Angeles, David grew up with his ears tuned constantly into the endless world of sounds around him. First picking up the guitar in the 4th grade in a futile attempt to imitate Kirk Hammett, he wisely switched to the tenor saxophone three years later. After two years of playing the tenor in the ‘A’ Jazz Ensemble at the prestigious Hamilton High School Academy of Music in Los Angeles, David switched his focus to the baritone.Following high school, David earned his B.A. in Saxophone Performance from UCLA (’02), where he studied with jazz luminaries Gary Foster, Gerald Wilson, Kenny Burrell, and Billy Higgins. It was Foster, whose clarinet and flute playing sparked interest in exploring the worlds of the other woodwind instruments, who encouraged David to experiment with the bass clarinet. During this time, he led his own group, The David Moyer Sextet, which performed throughout Los Angeles. After finishing school, David toured the country with the Columbia Artists’ production of ‘Our Sinatra,’ introducing him to life on the road. Since that time, he has toured/played/recorded with The Breakestra, Rilo Kiley, Bright Eyes, DJ Quik, Natasha Bedingfield, Robin Thicke, Jenny Lewis, Funkadelic, DJ Lethal, Dakah Hip Hop Orchestra, Guru, The Anthony Wilson Nonet, The Gerald Wilson Orchestra, James Gadson, Francisco Aguabella, Justo Almario, DJ Jedi, Ozma, Raheem DeVaughn, Gary Shiding, The Elected, Daara J, Darek Oles, John Kirby, Kevin Kanner, Adam Schroeder, Mike Bloom, and others. He recently contributed his compositional and production skills to the Warner Brothers skateboarding film ‘Andale Posse,’ and has musically contributed to HBO and Showtime Entertainment productions such as 'Entourage' and ‘Weeds.’ In addition, David has had his saxophone/flute playing featured on commercial work for companies such as Verizon. He has performed internationally at venues including Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Festival in Sete, France, La Defense Jazz Festival in Paris, San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts, The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, London's Barbican Theatre, and Baltimore’s Symphony Hall. David served as the Director of Instrumental Music at Los Angeles’ 32nd Street Visual and Performing Arts Magnet from 2005-2007. Rounding out his musical explorations, David is a founding member of the Los Angeles-based band The Ventriloquists, along with close musical cohorts Danny Levin and Jeff ‘Jolly’ Glassberg, introducing the keyboard to his arsenal. David also co-leads a modern jazz quintet called The Whitebelts, which reinterprets modern hip hop and rock in a jazz context, and his own David Moyer Groovetet. Along with Danny T Levin, David is one half of The Double D Horns, which has worked with many leading voices in rock, hip hop, r&b, and soul in both recording and live contexts.
