Red Wine

About Me

RED WINE is one of the premier bluegrass bands in Europe, actively touring since 1978, with a style that embraces traditional and contemporary bluegrass, country, gospel, and a little swing.RED WINE has played all over Europe, appearing at some of the major international festivals and venues in Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, Ireland, Holland, Czech Republic and Austria, sharing the stage with major acts from the USA and Europe and gaining a strong following everywhere.Since 1995 RED WINE has also been touring the USA regularly and intensively, appearing successfully, among the others, at the Bean Blossom Uncle Pen’s Memorial Day Bluegrass Festival (IN), the Oklahoma International Bluegrass Festival (Guthrie, OK), the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield (KS), the Bluegrass & Chili Festival (Tulsa-Claremore, OK), the Strawberry Festival (Camp Mather, CA), the Poppy Mountain Bluegrass Festival (Morehead, KY), the Mohican Bluegrass Festival (Greer, OH), The Station Inn (Nashville, TN), and at the massive 1995 and 2001 editions of the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) "World of Bluegrass" (Owensboro and Louisville, KY), playing two well-received Showcases and performing at Fan Fest. During these tours the band has also been featured in several TV and live radio shows, Terry Herd's Bluegrass Radio Network in Nashville TN, and Michael Johnathon’s Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour in Lexington KY, among the others.RED WINE has produced a self-titled cassette, an LP titled "Full Taste" (which was promoted on a nationwide tour with banjo wiz Tony Trischka), a cassette titled "Italian Flavor", a 20th Anniversary CD in 1998 “Times & Changes – original Red Wine since 1978”, and the CD “Italian Cats” in 2001. In 1999 the band also released a video clip of their own rendition of the Dylan’s song “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go”.Mandolin and lead singer Martino Coppo has played and recorded with Tony Trischka & Barbara Lamb, Gene Parsons, Carlo Aonzo, Freewheelin', Arizona, Francesco Guccini, Roberto Dalla Vecchia, Vittorio De Scalzi, La Rosa Tatuata, and performs frequently with Beppe Gambetta (one of Red Wine's founding members along with Silvio), the Kathy Chiavola Band, and Paolo Bonfanti. He also keeps a busy teaching shedule on bluegrass/folk mandolin, giving workshops and private lessons.Red Wine founding member Silvio Ferretti (banjo, guitar, dobro, harmony vocals) also played with Freewheelin' for a few years. He's contributed to music mags in Italy and the USA for about 25 years, and in the past 10 years has cultivated one of his lifelong passions working as a luthier. He also works as a consultant for Saga Musical Instruments, and plays with the Saga bluegrass band at the major music trade shows around the world. The new guitar player, Marco Ferretti, is only 18 years old and he is also a great banjo player (being son-of-a-banjo-player) and electric rock guitar player. He's quite recognizable among the other members for his hair style.Harmony singer and bass player, Stefano Cavallo, has a long personal musical history mostly with rock bands, including Reunion, with which he recorded a few songs for a Beatles tribute CD in the historical Abbey Road studios. His love for bluegrass, however, dates back to the early '80s, when he played with a band called the Green Cellar Society, which included Martino, Red Wine's former bass player Marco Curreri, and, for a brief time, Silvio as well.
