We'll leave it up to you to figure out if they really are ex's. (And yes, we know that "ex's" is grammatically incorrect, but "exes" looks weird.)
"Jen and the Ex's" music is a mixture of folk, rock, and alternative country. Jen Bresnahan is the main singer/songwriter and rhythm guitar player, who has joined with two Jeffs (Koch and Porter), collaboratively playing bass, guitar, mandolin, and lap steel. (Newest member is drummer Joe Evers, from Portland band "Pacific Wonderland.")
Jen is a Montana-bred singer/songwriter who essentially taught herself to play guitar at age 21, after getting her damn heart broken. Her songs are reminiscent of the '70's, but have a modern edge that is at once solemn and bluesy, yet hopeful and sincere.
She played solo for about seven years, coming out with two acoustic albums: "Ten Thirty-Two" in 2000, and "American Girl" in 2002. Her third album, "Ferris Wheel," was released September 30th, 2006. Fans claim it is her most mature material yet, in terms of lyrics and instrumentation. Noted guitar player Kerry Movassagh, local favorite Right On John, as well as friend and former drummer Eric Kotila were guest musicians on the album.
"Jen and the Ex's" have played at several venues in Portland, including McMenamins White Eagle, The Green Room, Mississippi Pizza Pub, Bitter End Pub, The Laurelthirst, Voleur, Rock Bottom Brewery, and Thirsty Lion, with the likes of Scotland Barr and the Slow Drags, the James Sasser Band, Hairspray Blues, and Beth Willis...Come check out a show soon! The live version of the band is worth seeing.
