BACKWATER

Backwater is an established regional band, having been formed in 1984, as a traditional bluegrass band. The group quickly gained local notoriety in Ocala performing long stints on Monday nights at such local pubs and taverns as Peter Dinkels, The Hilton, The Ritz Historic Inn, and currently, The Tin Cup Tavern. The locals call it "Monday Night Bluegrass on The Boulevard".Backwater regularly plays regional Bluegrass Festivals in Florida and Georgia, and has shared the stage with Rhonda Vincent, The Grascals, The Lonesome River Band, Randy Kohrs, Doyle Lawson, Nothin Fancy, Kenny & Amanda Smith, Marty Raybon, and The Steep Canyon Rangers. Backwater has also been active in The Silver Springs Concert Series for five years; having opened concerts for The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Wayne Newton, Marty Stewart, the Gatlin Brothers, Ray Stevens, and Bobby Goldsboro. The band members have backgrounds in Rock and Roll (Bill Taylor, the mandolin player, earned a Gold Record in 1968 with the Royal Guardsmen for "Snoopy vs The Red Barron"), Country, Gospel, and Contemporary Christian Music. This background, along with their steady tavern work, has formed their music into a style that can best be described as "high energy" contemporary bluegrass, with elements of rock, folk, country, blues, gospel, and jazz. Backwater's repertoire, while played acoustically in a typical bluegrass quartet format, spans over 100 years of musical styles, and the band is equally comfortable playing the tunes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Almand Brothers, Jerry Garcia, Jimmy Buffett, and Dierks Bentley, as they are Jimmy Martin, Flatt & Scruggs, Blue Highway, and Mountain Heart.An evening with Backwater is more than just concert.
