About Me

a
BUTTERFLY EFFECT VIDEO AS SEEN ON ALT TV AND C4!
Anything But Federal (ABF for short) have come a long way from their humble beginnings when local friends Ben Ruegg (guitar & vocals), Michelle Anderson (bass) and Paul Rishworth (drums) got together to jam one day and ended up writing 'Butterfly Effect' that would eventually become the opening track on their debut self titled EP. Although the songs on the EP all had a different sound, they eventually settled with the genre of alternative rock. Their first single 'Amongst Others' received rave reviews and airplay on the nation wide radio station The Rock FM.
Butterfly Effect was the second single released and it also received airplay on The Rock FM. It also became their first music video, which aired on C4 and Alt TV. It went without saying that ABF were a force to be reckoned with. But after Michelle left the band, Jonny Miles (guitar) shortly joined the trio and then Kevin Pilgrim (bass) turned the band into a fatal four way. The addition of a second guitar added to a heavier level of sound to the band. .
Best described as alt rock. Fusing together their different musical genre influences of Metallica, Foo Fighters, Every Time I Die, Taking Back Sunday and Kiwi giants Shihad, the resulting sound is all their own. The lyrics, written collaboratively, as is the music itself, often deal with personal topics such as relationships, our place in the world and day-to-day life itself. Ben Rueggs emotive voice comes in on top, creating an alt rock sound that hooks you in and gets you rocking out, and if not singing, then definitely humming along.
“It was obvious on first listen that [they have] something special… I look forward to hearing anything new from Anything But Federal... they will stamp their mark in NZ music” – Rob Taylor, DJ on The Rock, 2007.
After countless live shows in Auckland ABF were asked to compete in a local battle of the bands competition held by Jester Underground called Rock To The Top. The band plans to take a break from the live circuit to start work on new material and pre production for their up coming second EP due for a winter/spring release. A North Island tour will be planned for summer 09/10 so keep your eye out for the name Anything But Federal.
