About Me

I was born and raised in Baghdad into an artistic family with roots in Iraq and Egypt. In Baghdad I studied western classical music and learned to play the violin in The Music & Ballet School. I also took translation at Al Mustanseryah University in Baghdad at the Translation and English Literature department of the Faculty of English. I lived almost all my childhood in Iraq under different circumstances of great irony:a musically inspiring atmosphere at home, seven years at the Music and Ballet School, practicing the normal life under the threat of death during both Gulf Wars.In 1991 moved to Egypt and I had no chance to continue my musical studies.Moving back to Baghdad in 1997 made it even more difficult to catch up with the music studies, but I got great support from a group of friends who attended the University of Fine Arts in Baghdad. I was taken away with their artistic ambitions which freed my mind from anything else but music and art. Attending their concerts, which were usually held in Baghdad’s cultural centers, brought peace and freedom to that town, I BELIEVE!! Under the embargo rules and “unexpected” air strikes, and in a city that was shrinking every day, out of electricity except for few hours a day, I found Bob Dylans lyrics food for my brain, and Joan Baez’s voice peace for my mind. Moving to Sweden in 2001 after my father’s death, I started performing at different cultural arrangements and festivals in and outside Sweden. I took with me a great deal of life experience from Iraq and Egypt, which always pushes me forward and turns dreams into reality. To find myself on a stage and tell stories from another part of the world, and fuse it with my music.
