THE BIO
Before Silverchair came along The ScreamingJets were the most popular band to emerge fromthe Australian industrial town, Newcastle. More thanSilverchair, The Jets' music is a product of thattown. When the original band members were growing upin Newcastle they faced a future of either workingin the steelworks and associated industries or notworking at all. In a town like that the locals livehard, drink hard and want their rock hard. TheScreaming Jets gave them what they wanted.
Singer Dave Gleeson and guitarist Grant Walmsleyformed their first band in high school. In January1989 the two friends gathered another bunch ofNewcastle lads to form the hard driving hard rockingScreaming Jets, bringing with them their littleparty trick where Walmsley hung upside down with hislegs around the singer's neck without interruptinghis solo. Between songs singer Gleeson confrontedthe audience with his bad mouth, politicallyincorrect views, and spur of the moment outbursts.Self declared young Rolling Stones fans they werealso carrying on the Australian rock traditionsestablished by bands like AC/DC, the Angels and RoseTattoo.
By May 1980 the Jets had been signed to Roo Art,the internationally focused Australian label createdby INXS manager Chris Murphy. Following anintroductory EP, the band released its debut albumAll For One in April 1991 and scored an Australiantop 10 hit with "Better." While their music keptwinning them friends Dave Gleeson's mouth keptgetting them into trouble. At the end of 1991 theband embarked on a lengthy tour of the USA andEurope.
Since the release of their second album Tear OfThought in October 1992, The Screaming Jets haveplayed in well over 20 countries all around theworld, sacked members, lost members, scored anAustralian hit with their version of BirthdayParty's "Shivers," changed management and enduredhaving their Roo Art record contract passed fromdistributor to distributor. Through it all, theScreaming Jets have continued to record and perform,Dave Gleeson has learned to focus his attitude inhis lyrics and he and Walmsley have establishedthemselves as a classic rock and rollsinger/guitarist partnership, ala Jagger/Richards,Tyler/Perry.
