About Me

Phil Dwyer is an award-winning saxophonist/pianist/composer/arranger/producer and teacher who lives on Vancouver Island. He has been touring and recording since the mid '80's and has played with a 'who's who' of the music world. After spending 15 years living in Toronto and dividing his time between commercial studio work and various creative projects he returned to his west coast roots in 2004 to focus on writing and organic gardening, as well as touring as a soloist and with different groups. Among the artists with whom Phil is proud to be associated are Roberto Occhipinti, Don Thompson, Kenny Wheeler, Alain Caron, Gino Vannelli, the Clayton-Scott Group, CBC Orchestra, Hard Rubber Orchestra, Food for Thought Trio, Alan Jones, Darrell Grant, Dave Young, Bill Mays, Rodney Whitaker, Hilario Duran, Guido Basso, PJ Perry, Terri Lyne Carrington, Joe Labarbera, Rob Piltch, the Art Of Time Ensemble, Mark Fewer and the Duke Trio, Kate Alton(Overall Dance), Daniel Berman (Original Spin Media), Ian McDougall, Ian Tyson.....and many others.

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Trinity is a piece commissioned and performed by my friends in the Duke Trio. HBDS is the result of a CBC commission, honouring the birthday of Dmitri Shostakovich. This is performed by the wonderful Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. Days Gone By is from the new Don Thompson Quartet album "For Kenny Wheeler". Nothin Personal and Surrey are from an album with Terry Lyne Carrington (one of my absolute faves), Marc Rogers, and Robi Botos. Surrey is a tip of the hat to the classic Sonny Rollins/Philly Joe duet from Newk's Time. Are We Talking Too Loud? is from my "fusion" album, recorded shortly after the epic 1995 Gino Vannelli tour. Joining me on this album from that tour is the amazing drummer Paul Brochu (I am very lucky with drummers apparently!) Also on this track are guitarist Ted Quinlan, the incredible David Piltch on bass, and dueling keyboards-Doug Riley (Rhodes), and Dave Restivo (piano). This is not too representative of what I do these days, but sure is fun to listen to. The drum solo on the tag is pretty spectacular.
Influences: Sonny Rollins, Steve Grossman, Michael Brecker, Stan Getz, John Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Sonny Stitt, Stanley Turrentine......Don Thompson, Kenny Barron, Herbie Hancock, Wynton Kelly......Michael Colgrass, Rob McConnell, Rick Wilkins, Maria Schneider, Hilario Duran....Shostakovich....Charlie Parker, Freddie Hubbard, Kurt Vonnegut, Mordecai Richler, Derek&Clive.
