About Me

Arana Lynch has had a passion for writing since grade school. In the fourth grade he was given a Young Author’s Award for his short story, “The Adventures of My Bed and Me.” That was the same year Arana made his television debut, on the local Cleveland ABC affiliate WEWS-TV 5’s Watch/Write program, where he did a report on his favorite television show at the time, “Miami Vice.” Throughout grade school Arana has had a passion for engineering and science. He attended classes at Case Western Reserve University’s summer engineer’s program in high school, but it was another high school program that catapulted him into the world of journalism. Arana was a member of the Urban Journalism High School Workshop for four years. He learned about print and broadcast journalism from professionals working at the Cleveland Plain Dealer, WJW-TV Fox 8 and WEWS-TV 5 news. During his senior year he had a six-month co-op at the Cleveland Plain Dealer and began writing for the newspaper’s high school/teen section called NEXT. His article exposing teen criminals was a controversial story for the newspaper and the young journalist. After graduating from Lutheran High School East he attended Kent State University where he studied journalism and Pan-African studies. At Kent, Arana wrote for the school’s Daily Kent State and Uhuru Magazine. He also wrote as a professional journalist, too. In 1994 Arana became a Chips Quinn Scholar. The Chips Quinn Scholars program offered Arana hands-on training in journalism and mentoring by caring news veterans. The aim of the program is to provide support and encouragement that will open doors to news careers, as well as bring greater diversity to the nation’s newsrooms. As a scholar, Arana had the unique opportunity to work at a variety of newspapers: the Quincy Patriot Ledger in Boston, the Oakland Tribune, the Lima News and Detroit News. As an intern reporter Arana covered crime, politics and general assignments. It was during his internship at the Lima News that Arana received an honorable mention from the Associated Press for a series of articles related to drunk driving. Before graduating from Kent State with a degree in journalism and Pan-African studies, Arana was hired at the Akron Beacon Journal as a freelance writer and stringer. Arana covered education, crime, politics and other general assignments for the newspaper’s Community Extra section. In 1999, Arana was named the sports editor of the Cleveland-based Call&Post Newspapers six months after boxing promoter Don King purchased the historic Black weekly. During his tenure as sports editor Arana was named Sports Writer of the Year by the Ohio High School Athletic Association for his coverage of high school athletics throughout the 2002-03 academic year. In both 2002 and 2005 the Call&Post Sports section received a merit award for sports coverage. One of his many highlights as a sports writer was following the career of LeBron James through high school to the Cleveland Cavaliers, as well as doing stories on sports legends such as hall of fame football player Jim Brown and hall of fame golfer Charlie Sifford. Rueben “Hurricane” Carter, pro bowler Billy Oatman, Felix Trinidad, Ray Austin, Ted Ginn Sr. and Ted Ginn Jr. are among many local and national sports celebrities Arana has had the pleasure of writing about. As a sports writer Arana began writing and shooting his own independent films. Two – “Bogards” and “Gully” – are currently available via the Internet. Arana re-enrolled at Cleveland State University where he’s pursuing a degree in filmmaking, writing and performing arts. “The Street Chronicles According to Arana Lynch” began running in the Call&Post second edition, CP2, in January of 2007. “The Street Chronicles According to Arana Lynch” is a compilation of published and non-published columns. Arana is currently working on “Street Chronicles Volume II: The Memoirs of the Ol’ Dirty Bachelor.”.. Myspace Layout Generator-Layoutgen.com
