Influences: Childhood: the Scott Joplin rags my dad played on the piano...singing along with my ma to radio 2, various music lessons (clapping and counting (relatively fun), viola and piano (torturous)), chorus line performances of show tunes, inheriting my uncle's ABBA records, Top 40 Sundays...Teen years: guitar lessons (fingerpicking still cherished, rock licks not), giving them up to learn by math-surf-soul style of Slant 6 albums...Twenty-something: learning about the line and breath through poetry, living amongst Glasgow's various tastes and dreams...More recently: singing along to other voices to help find mine (Denise James, Vashti B, Edith Frost, Nanci Griffith), singing nonsense to my cats.
