FIGURA is an innovative music and theatre ensemble whose works include the circus-/cabaret opera MIKI Alone - Seven Songs For a Mad Woman (2002/04), the children opera Sleeping Policemen - a PIXI Opera (2005) and recently in 1:1 - a Chat Opera (2007).
From time to time FIGURA is just music. Last summer we gave concerts at The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art potraying the american composer Derek Bermel.
In September 07 the mono drama "Triumph" by the composer Niels Rønsholdt and the new-media artist Signe Klejs was a part of our show at LiteraturHaus in Copenhagen. The other part of the evening show was Olga Neuwirth's "Elfi und Andi".
In October 07 at The Sound Around Biennale at Black Box, Malmö we performed music by the Chinese/American composer Tan Dun - Academy Award winner of the best Original Score for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon".
In November 07 FIGURA created a new performance combining music and poetry: Peter Bruun and Ursula Andkjær Olsen's musical and literary cabaret Himmel-Havn (Heaven-Haven). Peter Bruun is a permanent member of FIGURA as composer and artistic "kicker". In Himmel-Havn he also takes part as a singer. The performance is built around several of his songs - varied with Ursula's readings and instrumental music by the multi instrumentalist Yasar Tas.
In FIGURA we have always been fond of contemporary and experimental music. We have played together for many years in FIGURA and have performed many places in Denmark and abroad. Seperately the members of FIGURA have played their role in several other connections: Helene Gjerris is known for her outstanding performance in Per Nørgård's vocal works "Nuits des Hommes" and "The Will-o'-the-Wisps go to Town", Jesper Egelund for his part in Det Lille Turneteater's "Hamlet", Frans Hansen is a highly estimated solo artist, performer and interpreter among others of the musical theatrical works of Mauricio Kagel, and Anna Klett has been a fundament in the Copenhagen music scene for many years including Athelas Ensemble and The duo MooseMatrix.
In 2006 FIGURA admitted set designer and architect Filippa Berglund to the ensemble as the investigation of the visual and spatial element always has engaged us.
This year the talented danish poetrist Ursula Andkjær Olsen became a part of the ensemble.
FIGURA Ensemble consists of: Helene Gjerris, Jesper Egelund, Frans Hansen, Anna Klett, Peter Bruun, Filippa Berglund, Ursula Andkjær Olsen.
