About Me

I started playing drums at the age of 6. My first band was in Massachusetts in the Athol High School in 1965. It was a surf band called of all things "The Penetrators", named after the song Penetration. In 1967 came a hit record in New England with my next band called The Bristols. it was called "With A Girl Like Her". WHYN in Springfield MA. played the hell out of that record that summer! I was 17 and it was 1967. I used to listen to my small AM radio every night until I heard that tune on various AM stations in New England as FM was in it's infancy. I was on the charts with The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Hollies and Searchers and life was good!............. In 1983 I recorded an LP called "Stories In The Dark" with John Coster and the Medicine Band. ........ In 1992 I was a founding member of Blue Streak with John Sheldon, our CD was called "Blue Streak" and can still be found in local stores. Check out John at his web page. He has written a few tunes that have been recorded by James Taylor, not too shabby!! That Blue Streak CD got major airplay around parts of the US.......... Along the way I have played in numerous bands in western MA since 1967. ...In 2003 I was invited to join Darren Bessette and Destination Bound. The tracks for a CD were recorded on Cape Breton Island, in Nova Scotia at Soundpark Studios. That band went on to open for numerous country stars of all stature. We had the pleasure of opening the Gillette Stadium country concert for 2 years in a row. Those shows set records for the largest country music shows in New Englands concert-going history of country music. That band went out of existence in 2006 after a run of 3 years. From 1994 to present I am playing with The Mark Nomad Band. Mark is a smokin guitarist and an all around great guy.. check out www.marknomad.com to find out where Mark is playing and my page here to find out what jobs I will be on with his band. I am on Mark's latest CD called "Electric Church" that was just released in late 2007 so watch for that one I can also be found on Marks last one called "Razor's Edge"........... Last but not the least is the Celtic music of The Boston Blackthorne Band who I have been a member of for almost 15 years now. Check out our web page at www.bostonblackthorne.com and get our CD. The songwriting of Jimmy O'Connor continues to win awards and to be nominated again and again. I have been lucky enough to have recorded numerous CD's and done many recording sessions and TV shows with my musical friends here in western MA and have had a blast doing it all. Check my calander to see where I am playing and with who....if you drop in, come up and say hello."and the beat goes on"........Dale Monette 8/1/2007 BOSTON BLACKTHORNE

Influences: ABOVE ARE SOME OF THE RECORDINGS I HAVE DONE OVER THE LAST 32 YEARS AND BELOW ARE SOME OF THE DRUMMERS WHO HAVE INFLUENCED THE PLAYING ON THESE RECORDINGS.................................................. ....................................... ............................................................ ....................................................One of my first influences was Mel Taylor of the Ventures. In 1964 the great British Invasions drummers really struck a chord with me. Bobby Elliot of the Hollies, (I went backstage and met him a few years ago on the first tour of the US in about 25 years by the Hollies, it was a highlight of my life!! thank you Robyn), Ginger Baker of Cream, Jim McCarty of the Yardbirds, Mick Avory of the Kinks, B.J. Wilson of Procol Harum, Mitch Mitchell of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Chris Curtis and the Searchers. Charlie Watts, Ringo, Keith Moon, Hal Blaine, Stan Lynch of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, George Grantham of POCO. Steve Gadd, Mark Brzezicki of Big Country, the great Scotish band, ALL the drummers that have been in Jethro Tull, and last but not the least is Kevin Conneff of the wonderful Irish band The Chieftains, who is a master of the bodhran. The list just goes on and on. Wether I am playing the blues or rock, or Celtic with my bodhran, its the groove that counts. I read an interview with Ringo once and he said "it's what you dont play that makes you good" that says it all......................................................... ............................................ Cape Breton and Canadian music: I also love the Celtic music of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland Canada. I have recorded up there and have some very good friends who live on the Island. We go up 2 times a year. Check out Bruce Aitken's Cape Breton International Drumfestival............................SEE MY CAPE BRETON 2008 DRUM FESTIVAL PHOTOS IN MY PIC'S SECTION World Visitor Map
