What becomes a king? For King Ujah, his castle is built on solid principles of integrity, perseverance and a strong commitment to the Almighty. His crowning glory is reggae music that the fertile Jamaican soil nurtures. King Ujah had a childhood fascination with music, often falling asleep to the sounds of such original dance hall foundation artists as General Trees and Brigadier Jerry.
He made his official debut at the tender age of eight when he preformed for his grade two class. Some people grow into their vocations over time, while others are instinctively drawn to it. For King Ujah his calling came at birth, his love for music and innate gifts to perform and create is immediately recognizable in his stage performance and presence. Growing up, a persistent and tenacious desire to refine himself as an artist kept him involved in the highly competitive music business of Jamaica. He thrived on the challenge and cut his teeth by performing at clubs and contest quickly earning a name for himself "as an artist to be reckoned with."
In 1987, armed with life experience and a great understanding of his art form, King Ujah got his first break at the Pop & Variety DJ Contest in Kingston, Jamaica. Back then he developed the stage name "Juckie Junior." "I want to bring true cultural reggae music to the four corners of the earth, that has always been my goal and I believe that I will achieve it." Taking a cue from such legendary artists as Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs and Bob Marley, King Ujah saw his calling, as a way to continue the conscious message in music, that these artists had so eloquently carved out. His songs reflect the dedication to cultural awareness and spiritual upliftment and his sights are firmly set on the continuation of positive musical vibes.
In 1990, when Mandela was released from prison, the world was given a renewed sense of hope. On the heels of this momentous event, King Ujah released the first of a string of hits." Freedom Blues" that captured the mood of the people and inspired hope and optimism on an otherwise bleak global canvas. The frame of mind set the tone for King Ujah's stature as an artist and the single took off on the international charts and "scoring a home run in Jamaica."
King Ujah has proven himself to be a versatile artist, winning fans over with sheer talent and tenacity. His status as a bonafide artist was acknowledged with invitations to perform at Jamaica's most prestigious and popular events: Reggae's Sunsplash blastoff at Walter Fletcher's Beach and Reggae Sunfest. With a steady stream of popular singles making deep inroads in England and America, King Ujah has maintained an international presence even as far away as Japan where his photo appeared in the youth driven publication "Guidepost."
In 1998 King Ujah performed at the popular Jamaica Day Event in Toronto with artist such as Professor Nuts and General Trees. The year 2003 was a busy time for King Ujah Launching his album "BEAUTY FOR ASHES". Shining Light was one of the singles on "Beauty for Ashes" that got the number one spot on the Canadian Reggae Music Chart and to put the icing on the cake he won "TOP REGGAE NEWCOMER MALE" at the Canadian Reggae Awards. The Calgary Reggae Festival was no different when he gave an exceptional performance, he was definitely a crown pleaser.
Throughout his steady ascent on the road to fame he has never lost sight of his culture or the role he plays as an artist of the people. King Ujah has built his kingdom on the struggles of everyday life, personal growth and experience and a quest for greater spiritual knowledge.
