A Look at the Square
By Matthew Siegmann
She sits in the center surrounded yet alone,
From here a city was forged and grown.
Starting as a crossroads where farmers would meet,
She later became the heart of the new county seat.
The mighty Cherokee came though being moved from their lands,
A Trail of Tears was made thanks to bloody white hands.
Soldiers were quartered here during the great Civil War,
But the people came back and made her grow.
A department store was built, the first in the land,
A new era in retail started, Heer was the man.
Streetcars came to haul people around town,
50 years later they were shut down.
Hickock shot Tutt from across the Square;
He was acquitted of the charges which is almost unfair.
Three black men were hung 'cause of one woman's lie,
To think of the lynch mob makes one want to cry.
The hustle and bustle remained though and through,
There were fairs and parades and Route 66 was there too.
Then the Depression hit and the country went broke,
But the city survived and the Square stayed afloat.
Downtown did great, she flourished and thrived,
But when the malls came could the Square stay alive?
She struggled for years as businesses said, "Bye,"
Until at last the department store died.
Now we sit and we ponder and we make some amends,
As we make this place prosper and great once again.
