Hot Rod Deluxe

About Me

We are a motely crew of deadbeats born out of Rockabilly, psychobilly, country and punk influences. Collectively we have been in more bands than you can shake a stick at. But if shaking sticks at bands at their gigs is your bag, then come along. So because of our many influences we can't decide totally what style to play. But in the end it sounds like us! So if you like us tell us, AND DON'T FORGET add us as a freind so as to keep up to date with all our latest gigs.

RECENT REVIEW: PANIC MAGAZINE REVIEW (November'08 Issue 29) With the woody growl of the stand up bass, the swinging drive of the drums, and the commanding presence of their singer guitarist, Hot Rod Deluxe dominate the venue. Even with the Barhouse totally contemporary vibe, Hot Rod Deluxe make you believe you have fallen back into the middle of the last century. This is better than the 50's could have been. This night has more tattoos, louder amps, hotter women, and harder muisc. Hot Rod Deluxe touch on everything from Cash to Setzer to Hank 1 & III, every member a master of their instrument, and no one forgetting the importance of being cool. The crowd reaction is immese, the swining rockin' bodies so energetic. Written by: Adrian Bigwood

Interview With UK Psychos Hot Rod Deluxe

By Cass (03/12/2008)

This week we managed to get an interview with English based psycho band "Hot Rod Deluxe".

Cass: What was the psychobilly and rockabilly scene like when you were growing up?

STU: I come from Glasgow and I was lucky enough to be involved right from the start. When Psychobilly erupted in the mid 80's I was a teenager so I remember The Guana Batz, Demented, and Batmobile as they were coming out. My best memories were in a pub called Hurricanes in Glasgow, the psychos totally took over that bar! My friends and I started bands obviously, most notably The Termites, which my friend Kenny Mitchell has recently reformed. They have a new album out so please check it!!

STEVE: I grew up around Romford Essex and the East End. The rockabilly scene was good there also in Southend and North London. Great DJ’s but the bands were a bit thin on the ground.

ROB: The scene, well im only 21. I grew up being influenced by my elder brother’s music, Rockabilly, Punk and of course The Meteors, The Cramps, etc. This was my first introduction to the scene that is. but around the Essex area where I have grown up and live there is a good rockabilly scene, I stated playing drums in a rockabilly band when I was at school, we were only 45mins form London so most weekends there were gigs if you want to go.

Cass: How and when did the band form?

STU; Steve and I hooked up by total accident about 6 years ago, but we hit it off right away cause we have nearly exactly the same tastes. My background is Psycho so the band will always have a flavour of it somewhere.

STEVE: I met Stu in Chelmsford. I wanted to put an add in his shop window looking for musicians. We got chatting. Stu called me back later, lined up a drummer and the band was formed. We gigged 5 weeks later.

ROB: Well the band was formed before I joined them. A mate of mine who also new the guys said he knew a drummer, 2 weeks later Stu called (eventually) and I was asked to do a gig with them. I played supporting Vince Ray and the Boneshakers in Ipswich and they took me on from there.

Cass: Who are you influenced by?

STU: My tastes have evolved through the years as my playing has got better (laughs). In the early days it was just loud and fast but in Hot Rod Deluxe there is more control. I love outlaw country and melody. As for guitar players it's still Cliff Gallup and Mark Harmon, but I'm loving country players like Johnny Hilland just now.

STEVE: Brian Setzer, BR549, Hank III, Wayne Hancock, Johnny Cash and early rockabilly and 1950’s country/rockabilly crossover stuff.

ROB: Im into everything really, I love the old favourites like every one, ‘Stray Cats’ etc, and will listen to most things if it has a good beat to it. At the moment I’m into the ‘Reverend Horton Heat’ think he is awesome and some of the drumming on his stuff is brilliant. But having said that Bernie Dressell is one of my all time favourite drummers, he is currently playing with the Brian Setzer Orchestra.

Cass: What are you currently working on?

ROB: We are currently working on getting the rehearsals in and sorting out tracks for our forth coming album.

Cass: What are your plans for the future?

STU: Getting a release out and doing some promotion really. I'm working on some new stuff to put on the album.

ROB: We plan to hopefully keep doing the gigs hopefully more in 2009 than 2008!! Meeting people, and hopefully get the album sorted out. Best thing to do if you want to know what we are doing is add us on www.myspace.com/hotroddeluxe and we can keep everyone posted.

Cass: When are you next playing and do you plan on doing a European tour?

STU: Europe is where it's at! They have deeper appreciation for the rockin' stuff. Here in England we are spoiled, it's always here and we take it for granted. Any Psycho band from the UK will tell you they have a ball in Germany, Holland, Spain, the crowds there are great. We hope to get our asses there soon, starting at The Cruise Inn in Amsterdam, great venue!

Cass: Where can we get your merchandise like albums and t-shirts?

STU: Yeah we have T-shirts available, you can contact us through our Myspace site!

ROB: Hopefully have an album out some time next year and this will be announced on the Myspace so keep an eye out for it.

Cass: What is the psychobilly scene like now in your area?

STU: London is still the Mecca in the UK. There are some faithful promoters out here, most notably the guys from Speedfreak promotions. Gigs are still regularly on at The Ace Cafe, Bar Monsta in Camden, and The Underworld. You can go to a psycho gig most weekends here.

Cass: Can you recommend our readers on any good new(or old) local psychobilly and rockabilly bands?

STU: Check out The Graveyard Johnnys a new band from Newport. (Crazy Cavans son Joe is the singer) There gonna cause a storm next year. Please check out The Mojo Kings (good fiends of ours), Rezurex, The Celtic Bones, Mad Dog Cole, Henry and the Bleeders. All excellent and local bands!

Cass: Who, in your opinion, are the best bands on the scene?

STU: . My favourites are ones that I have stuck with for years. Long Tall Texans have never done a bad gig in their lives! I love The Caravans but I would like to see Mark back on Double Bass! Batmobile, and of course The Meteors, my love for them is endless. For the new school I rate The Peacocks, Rezurex, Vince Ray, Joe Hellraiser and The Grave Robbin Bastards. Some of the new bands are too heavy for me, some don't sound "billy" enough. If your in a punk band and just add a double Bass it doesn't make you a Psychobilly band.

Cass: Anything to say to our psycho readers?

STU: Websites like yours are essential to the survival of the Psycho/Rockabilly scene. So thanks for all involved in producing the site. To the readers, please get involved in the input of the site. There are always new bands to discover and it's up to you to tell them.

ROB: If you like our stuff then let us know. If you want us to play near you then let us know. Contact us through the Myspace all our contact details are on there. Its psycho readers like yours that are creating the scene today and keeping it going, everyone needs to get out, support each other and have fun! That way it will keep rolling along staying as strong as it is today.

All: See you all hopefully soon. Hot Rod Deluxe.

Woah!, let's not open this can of worms, we will be here all night. Let's just say we like Rockabilly, country and punk. Hank iii, Wayne Hancock, Setzer blah blah blah....you know the drill!
Sounds Like: Hank III doing a really bad gig, or a bad Rockabilly band doing a good gig!
