The Spice Girls are an English all-female pop group, who formed in London in 1994. The Spice Girls, consisting of: Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm and Geri Halliwell were under the management of Herbett and Son - who had originally created the group. However, differences set them apart.
Simon Fuller took on the role as manager and they signed to Virgin Records in September of 1995; in which they recorded material for their debut album, Spice which sold over 23 Million albums worldwide - becoming the bestest selling album by any girl-group of all time in music history.
They released their debut single, 'Wannabe', on July 8th 1996. The song went on to spend seven weeks atop the UK Singles Chart; which not only makes it the longest reign at Number One by any girl-group, but it is also the biggest debut ever in music history! It helped establish the group as an "international phenomenon"
Scary, Baby, Ginger, Posh and Sporty were the most widely recognized group of individuals since John, Paul, George and Ringo. The group became a regular feature of the British press and embraced merchandise which grossed over 100 Million worldwide, within a year.
They went on to release Three studio albums and a Greatest Hits (two of which reached the number one position, the others reaching Number 2, respectively). They released eleven singles and gained a total of 9 number ones. Collectively the Spice Girls have the most number ones by a all girl-group. They've also had 3 consecutive back-to-back Christmas Number Ones, between the years of 1996-1998.
After notching up more number one hit singles with 'Say You'll Be There' and the 1996 Million Christmas Number One Seller '2 Become 1' they released the last single of their debut album, Spice with 'Who Do You Think You Are/Mama' which was the official 1997 Comic Relief single.
On 24th February 1997, 'Who Do You Think You Are' was made as an infamous performance at the 1997 Brit Awards, when the Spice Girls opened the show. Geri wore the iconic Union Jack Dress, which later went on to sell over £42,000 at Auction - which to date is still the most expensive outfit memoribilia in pop history.
Girl Power!, The Spice Girls' first book and manifesto was launched later in March, 1997 at the Virgin Megastore. It sold 200,000 copies within a day, and was eventually translated into more than 20 languages. In April, Spice: the Official Video Volume One, was released, and sold half a million copies.
In May, Spice World was announced by the Spice Girls at the Cannes Film Festival. The group also performed their first live British show, for the Royalty of Great Britain. At the show, they breached royal protocol when Mel B and then Geri Halliwell planted kisses on Prince Charles' cheeks and pinched his bottom, causing controversy.
By March, 1997, they would go on to be the first act in music history to have their first four singles go to the Number 1 position. Furthermore, they would become the first and only girl-band to have their first six singles go to Number 1. This was after they'd released their October 1997 smash-hit 'Spice Up Your Life' and their second consecutive christmas hit, in December 1997 with 'Too Much'. 'Stop', their seventh single was the first to break this run, when it stalled at Number 2 in the charts in March 1998.
In October, 1997 the girls performed their first ever concert in Istanbul in front of 40,000 fans. Later, the girls travelled to South Africa to met Nelson Mandela, who announced - “These are my heroes. This is one of the greatest moments in my life”.
In November 1997, just after the release of their second number 1 album, 'Spiceworld' it was confirmed in the media that the girls had sacked their manager, Simon Fuller; who had been desribed as the mastermind behind the Spice Phenomenom.
Nevertheless, success continued on Boxing Day of 1997, when they released their debut film, 'Spiceworld: The Movie'. The film grossed $75 Million Worldwide and reached the number one position in the UK film charts.
The Spice Girls spent christmas in Ireland, rehearsing for the 102 - Day World Tour, that Fuller had set up for them. The girls then embarked on a world tour that began on February 24th 1998, in Dublin and The Point Stadium. The tour covered the UK, Europe, and America.
On 31 May 1998, Geri Halliwell announced her departure from the Spice Girls. Through her solicitor she issued the following statement: "Sadly I would like to confirm that I have left the Spice Girls. This is because of differences between us. I'm sure the group will continue to be successful and I wish them all the best.
The four remaining girls were adamant though that the group would carry on and that their approaching North American tour would continue as normal; however, Halliwell's departure threw most of the group's plans into disarray.
During their time in America, they released 'Viva Forever' which again saw the Spice Girls at number one. It was also one of the biggest hits in Canada, by staying at the top of the charts for an impressive 16 weeks.
On the 20th September, 1998 - the four girls performed to a crowd of 55,000 fans at Wembley Stadium which marked the end of the tour. In total they performed to 2.1 million fans across the globe.
In December 1998, The Spice Girls released their first single as a four-piece band. 'Goodbye' was the girls' 8th Number One out of a possible 9 singles. It became the girls 3rd Christmas Number One. It also became one of Canada's biggest number ones, spending an impressive 16 weeks at the top of the charts.
The Spice Girls returned to the studio in August 1999, after an 8 month recording break to start work on their third album. The album's sound took a mature direction when American producers like Rodney Jerkins, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis came on to collaborate with the group.
In December 1999 they performed live for a UK-only tour, named 'Christmas in Spiceworld, in London and Manchester, also showcasing new songs from the third album. This was the last tour the Spice Girls did before reuniting.
2000 saw the comeback year for the Spice Girls. 2000 saw them release a new album and have another number one. They performed at the 2000 BRIT Awards, where they received the Outstanding Achievement In Music Award. Despite being at the event, Geri Halliwell did not join her former bandmates on stage.
In November 2000, the group released 'Forever' which peaked at Number 2 in the UK. Forever managed to sell over four million copies worldwide.
The Singles fared better with 'Holler' and 'Let Love Lead The Way' both reaching the Number One position.
In early 2001 (although never formally announced) the girls seperated to focus on their solo careers.
On June 28, 2007, the Spice Girls reformed and released a 'Greatest Hits' album that peaked at Number 2 in the UK charts. The Greatest Hits album has so far sold over six million copies worldwide.
The Spice Girls reunion was also accompanied by a World Tour - Return of The Spice Girls which sold out in an impressive 38 Seconds. The tour began on December the 2nd in Vancouver, and ended on February 26th in Toronto. The comeback tour grossed over 70 million worldwide. The reunion also coincided with an official documentary -'Giving You Everything' which aired on BBC in December of 2007.
Since the end of the tour, they've won numerous of prestigious awards, including the Capital FM 'Icon Award', 'Best Band', as voted by Glamour Magazine readers and the 'Best Live Return' awarded by the Vodafone Music Awards, beating Led Zepplin! And most recently, the triumph win at the American Billboard Awards; in which they were awarded for 'Top Boxscore' for their 17-night stint at London's 02 Arena.
Since the release of their Greatest Hits, they have sold in total an excess of over 70 million records worldwide .
They're the best-selling and biggest girl-band ever in pop music history.
So, who are the Spice Girls? Well they're one of the most influential and iconic bands in music history.
Inventing the term 'Girl Power'. They've amassed huge sales and spread Spice Fever across the globe. They caught the attention of audiences all over the world - even including Royalty. They are a Four Time Brit-award, Smash Hits and Billboard Winner - to name but a few.
They've had the most number ones by any female band ever. They released a movie and made their mark in popular culture.
....and if another girl-band comes along and achieves their success or re-creates it, atleast we can say
