The band got their name when Vince Hornsby was in his grandmothers garage and he came across a bag of Sevendust pestisides. When they started out they were called Crawlspace but, they couldnt use that name because a band on the West Coast had the name. About SEVENDUST History Sevendust released their first self-titled album on April 15, 1997. This album is known for its heavy riffs, angry vocals and thrash-like drumming. The songs "Black" and "Bitch" are the best-known songs from this album. Sevendust was first played on a local radio station in Orlando, FL called Real Rock 101.1 WJRR. While they still consider Atlanta, Ga home Orlando, FL is their second home. "Black" was the opening song for nearly every Sevendust concert until 2004. The debut album also contains the song "My Ruin" from their Crawlspace days which is included in the Mortal Kombat soundtrack album entitled "More Kombat" released by TVT Records. After they appeared at Ozzfest 1998 and Dynamo Open Air the same year, their self-titled album went gold. In the same year they released a compilation called "Live and Loud" which featured live footage of the band at Chicago's Metro. Two years later, on August 24, 1999, they released their second album, Home, which has also gone gold. Home is best-known for songs "Denial", and "Waffle" for which they have shot music videos. Skin from Skunk Anansie and Chino Moreno from Deftones appeared as guest vocalists on two songs, "Licking Cream" and "Bender". Also featured on "Bender" was additional guitar work by Troy McLawhorn of doubleDrive. They appeared in Woodstock 1999 and have toured with many bands such as Ko?n, Staind, Reveille, Godsmack, Mudvayne, Powerman 5000, Creed, Kid Rock, Machine Head, Limp Bizkit and Metallica. In 1999, they gained European exposure by opening for Skunk Anansie at various shows in Germany. They also joined Slipknot, Coal Chamber and other bands on a tour called "Tattoo The Earth Tour" in June of 2000 . They then headed into the studio to record their third album, Animosity, which was released on November 13, 2001. Aaron Lewis of Staind did guest vocals on the song "Follow". This album went gold and gained the band commercial success. However, Sevendust's career has had tragedies. The band were friends with the band Snot who lost their singer Lynn Strait. Lajon Witherspoon paid tribute to him with Snot's instrumentalist on the Strait Up compilation album with a song called "Angel's Son" which was re-recorded with the Sevendust instrumentalist and placed on Animosity. More tragedy struck when Dave Williams of Drowning Pool died. Finally, the band went on a temporary hiatus after Lajon's younger brother was killed. In 2003, Sevendust returned with their fourth album, Seasons. This album is considered by many to be Sevendust's best album and is their most popular album to date. It contains the hit songs "Enemy", "Broken Down", "Face to Face" and "Separate". The song "Enemy" was used as the official theme song for WWE Unforgiven 2003. In 2004, for the first time in the band's career, they released a live album on a CD/DVD double disk package titled Southside Double-Wide: Acoustic Live. Both the CD and the DVD include a cover of "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails as a tribute to Johnny Cash.On December 15, 2004, it was announced Clint Lowery had left the band due to musical differences. Immediately after the departure, Lowery was replaced temporarily by J3, a member of Tommy Lee's solo band, but it was officially announced that Sonny Mayo (from Snot and Amen) was the new replacement for Clint. Clint is now working with a new band called Dark New Day which also features his brother, Corey Lowery. At roughly the same time, Sevendust and TVT Records parted ways.On October 11, 2005, Sevendust released their fifth studio album, Next, on their new label, Winedark Records, distributed by Universal Music. In the process, Sevendust has also created their own record label, 7Bros Records. The first radio single off Next was the track "Ugly", released to radio August 9, 2005. A music video was also produced and released for "Ugly". The track "Pieces" appeared on the soundtrack for the film Saw II. Next debuted at #20 on the Billboard Charts, relatively unheard of for a band of Sevendust's hard rock genre.Sliding under the radar, Sevendust's old label, TVT Records, released a greatest hits package for Sevendust on December 27, 2005. There was no comment on this production by the band until 6 days before its release. Titled Best of (Chapter One 1997-2004), this release constitutes the final release by Sevendust under the TVT Records moniker. The release is somewhat controversial however, as many feel TVT is just cashing in one final time on their former most successful client. On March 6, 2006, the track "Failure" became the second single from Next. This was reported by the official Sevendust website. Its peak was in the 28th spot on the Billboard music charts. In April 2006, Sevendust announced that they had gained "freedom" from their contract with Winedark Records. However Sevendust announced they were still represented through their self label, 7 Bros. Records. The track "Pieces" off the Next album was said to be the third single and was planned to be released on June 26, 2006, as confirmed by the official website, but never made any official chartings. On March 6, 2007, the band released their sixth studio album, titled Alpha, on Asylum Records in the midst of a 57-date headlining tour. "Driven" was the first single off of it. "Beg to Differ" was then released as a single. As of now, Sevendust continues to tour, doing both headlining dates and festival shows. All photos Ethan Miller / Getty ImagesVideoMySpace customization Alpha, the sixth and newest album from Sevendust, marks a return to the band's origins and a welcome sonic assault to their legions of followers.Crammed into the same rehearsal/writing room which spawned their ground-breaking 1997 debut, Sevendust found themselves right where it all started in their hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. Recorded at Tree Sound Studios with long time friend and co-producer/engineer Shawn Grove, Alpha was born.Indeed conceptual in nature, Alpha explores the recesses of the mind and the torturous conflict within the question: Can I possibly continue along this path?Gone are the acoustic guitars and overt electronic inflection of the last couple of records as the band returns to a raw, uncompromising complexity reminiscent of the Home years. There in the humble beginnings and stomping grounds where it all began, the band brewed up twelve brutal tracks blending a new innovative crunch with that infamous, ferocious throat. From the blood-curdling vocal introduction of the first track, Deathstar, the listener knows it's old school Sevendust on a collision course with a fresh burning desire to obliterate, even if the victim may come from within.Atlanta-based Sevendust became one of the rising stars in late-'90s heavy metal with an aggressive blend of bottom-heavy riffs and soulful, accessible melodies. The band, comprised of frontman Lajon Witherspoon, John Connolly (guitar), Clint Lowery (guitar), Vince Hornsby (bass), and Morgan Rose (drums), first appeared in 1995 as Crawlspace, releasing the single "My Ruin" on the Mortal Kombat: More Kombat recording. Shortly thereafter the group changed their name to Sevendust and released their self-titled debut in 1997. Two years later, they issued Home and played over 800 shows alongside groups like Creed and a gig at Woodstock '99. Their angst-ridden third album, the aptly titled Animosity, appeared in fall 2001, and Seasons followed in 2003. In late December 2004 word surfaced that Lowery had left the band, and those rumors proved true the following February when Sevendust announced ex-Snot guitarist Sonny Mayo as Lowery's replacement. (Lowery, a co-founder of Sevendust, eventually surfaced in the hard rock supergroup Dark New Day.) Next, Sevendust's fifth album, appeared in October 2005, with Alpha following in March 2007. Hard work and constant touring are one way to get your name and music out to the masses. The Atlanta-based band Sevendust is putting that idea to the test.In less than four years, the band has recorded three albums, including its most recent, "Animosity," and has performed more than 800 shows."There's a couple of people in the band that have kids now, so it's important to make sure we get home every now and then," guitarist Clint Lowery recently said before the band's sound check in Pittsburgh. "We'll tour the same year and a half or so as always, but we'll try to have more breaks in between to rejuvenate us."The tour will stop at Ziggy's in Winston-Salem on Saturday with guests Soil and Breaking Point."The longer our album is out, the more familiar people are with it," Lowery said. "People are singing the words more and more. It's always good to have people sing along to the songs."Sevendust plays its own brand of "nu metal," a hard-charging juggernaut backed by the melodic vocals of singer Lajon Witherspoon."I don't want to say we write the best songs in the world, but we have a certain element about us that's a little different," Lowery said. "Lajon being a really good singer helps us be more of a soulful standout. All bands should have a signature sound. That's the whole point of (making music)."Lowery, 30, sees the categorizing of bands these days as "nu metal" as similar to the early-'90s categorization of bands as alternative. With numerous bands lumped together under one title, Sevendust knows it must do more to stand out."I respect what some of the bands are doing right now, but I get really bored with it," Lowery said. "Not much out there is really interesting. No one is trying to be different; they're all sticking to a formula. No one is using their brains - it's all Rock 101 stuff."He went on to discuss the band's pride in "Animosity," saying the band sees it as a big step musically and "more melodic but still heavy."Although band members have another year or more of touring ahead of them for the new album, they know a new album will be in the works soon."We've been together for a long time, but I think our best work is still in the future," Lowery said. "We'll probably start writing the new record sooner rather than later just to get a heads-up on it. We don't want to take a long time off because it's what we do for a living."But even as he plays to pocket a paycheck, Lowery hopes to leave the crowd with something memorable."I always want people, during certain sections of the songs, to get chill bumps and to leave mentally and physically exhausted," he said. "It gives you something to remember and lets you forget about your life for about 90 minutes."
