CHARLIE MURDOCH came to America in 1779. he brought with him his wife Cecelia, and his family's famous whiskey recipe, which at the time was one of the most sought after recipes in all of Ireland!! CHARLIE settled near the bank of the Ohio River in West Virginia, and started brewing his whiskey to sell to cold and weary travelers. his wife would prepare small chunks of potatoes that were minced and fried. the travelers came to know them as Celia's Tater tots. During the whiskey rebellion of 1791-1794, sales slowed from all the men who came from the hills to escape taxation on their products. this prompted CHARLIE to take his business on the road. he came to Pittsburgh, and sold his whiskey and cheaper moonshine in disguise. he sold his whiskey in medicine bottles, and his shine in apple cider jugs, inadvertently inventing the modern day Manhattan and Apple Martini. as the authorities of the time cracked down harder on the untaxed sale of alcohol, CHARLIE began to hide his product in the bottom of boxes of his wife's famous tater tots. CHARLIE sold his packages, as legend tells, on this very site to families leaving Sunday services who picnicked along the Monongahela River banks.
The pioneering and adventurous spirit of CHARLIE MURDOCH lives on in the historic and venerable structure that resides at 1005 East Carson Street. This shrine has many chapters and has been many things in it's long and colorful history. It has always been a gathering point for the curious and the controversial, and those seeking spiritual awareness. This magnetic structure, like Rock 'n' Roll, was born of controversy and intrigue. Those looking for acceptance and those who desire to be unique have always been drawn to this location. How perfectly ironic it is that it still possesses the lucky charms of it's founder, and that spirit lives on in the home of the best live music in the city of Pittsburgh.

Our venue is a beautiful old building that at one time was a house of worship. A happy patron sent Joey G an email and a picture of him rocking the house, calling Charlie Murdoch's "THE CHURCH OF ROCK". Of course, it stuck. And as Joey always says during the show, "We pray to different spirits in this Church". Thank you, our most cherished fans. Our fans gave us the ultimate compliment by saying that... "AN EVENING AT CHARLIE MURDOCH'S IS LIKE SEEING ALL OF YOUR FAVORITE BANDS IN THE SAME NIGHT"... We take that very seriously, and all of our players perform with virtuosity, love, and respect. That's our reputation and we earn it every night. A satisfied customer said "THE SOUTH SIDE STARTS HERE". We love that, and we love the things our fans say.
