Aug 17 2007 - Who do you trust, Doctors, or Western Forest Products? Excerpts from presentations to the SCRD, Local Board of Health Aug 9 & 10 2007. Quotes from the Vancouver Sun: "Dr. Victor Dirnfeld, of Richmond, said the resolution -- calling for safe, clean and reliable drinking water for all Canadians -- was particularly poignant at a time when the Sunshine Coast Regional District is before the courts fighting to stop a "large, rich and powerful" company -- Western Forest Products -- from logging in its watershed. "We need to empower Canadian communities . . . to protect [residents] from the contamination of their water supplies," he said."
"Members of the powerful doctors' lobby group also passed 15 "green" resolutions, including calls for swift government action to protect domestic drinking-water supplies, reduce air pollution and curtail pesticide use. Delegates said the need for urgent action was highlighted by water crises in Walkerton, Ont., North Battleford, Sask., and numerous first nations communities, but even Vancouver, which boasts excellent drinking water, had a health scare last fall after heavy rains turned city water a muddy brown."
Aug 23 2007 In BC Supreme Court, Justice Butler announced, (without inspecting all of the evidence - this is for the Appeal case Judge),
the decision of staying (setting aside) mostly every part of the Stop Work Order issued by the Sunshine Coast Regional District, Board of Health to Western Forest Products.
This includes #7 of the Order regarding strict water monitoring during the forest activities! As far as #6 Riparian Areas, why did WFP hire a consulting co. to engineer environmental Bridges to protect one stream - but yet feels it is ok to fell trees into the others?
The only preserving part of the Order which was upheld, is the cut blocks on the steep slopes where approx. 1/3 of the trees have already been felled and others are prepared for removal.
Western Forest Products has no responsibility to the watershed , as they were issued the license to harvest these trees on steep slopes by the by the Province.
The official Appeal date is Sept 10, which by then every other cut block mentioned in the Order (Old Growth) will be felled, and prudent avoidance to protect the integrity of this watershed and public safety will be moot. Western Forest Products spokesperson announced that Forestry practices in the watershed are Safe, Citizens are calling this Eco-Terrorism by WFP and the Province of BC.
On Aug 11, 2007 The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD), Local Board of Health issued an Order against Western Forest Products logging in the most sensitive areas of the Chapman Creek Watershed that was the subject of complaint. To view the Order doccument go to: www.yourwatershed.com
PART ONE of two parts.
Part Two - Aug 12 2007 update of the Chapman Creek Community Watershed. This is a sensitive area that many feel needs complete preservation in order to safeguard the future of drinking water and the ecosystem provided by the old growth forests. The area has been logged in the past and was still "in recovery".
