In order to properly document old school punk / Hardcore in L.A., you definitely could not leave out ANTI. ANTI, along with Crucifix and maybe a couple others, where amongst the first wave of politically oriented “Peace†punk bands that started popping-up in the U.S.
ANTI was also one of the first punk bands in L.A. to start their own label dubbed, New Underground. Run by members Gary Kail and Danny Dean Phillips, the label was created with the intention of releasing vinyl by many bands other than their own.
Besides this great endeavor, Gary and Danny were also involved as full-time members of another great L.A. punk bands of that era, “Mood of Defianceâ€.
In addition , Danny wrote “The South Bay Report†and a variety of interviews for Flipside. Gary on the other hand, was involved with various industrial noise projects, most notably, Zurich 1916.
When you take all of this into perspective, it’s really quite impressive how much they were able to contribute to a then exploding scene. So there ya have it, the straight shit on how truly Great ANTI was.

ANTI was formed in 1980. When DANNY DEAN of DANNY DEAN and the HOMEWRECKERS and EASTER meet Gary Kail in Lawndale California when Danny had just quit his rockabilly band Skinny Memphis in late 1979.
Gary kail at the time was in the 415's, I stopped by a Pizza joint called Pizza Show and saw Gary working there and asked him if they sold slices he said that would be a great but they wont, he noticed I was wearing a 999 and Buzzcocks pins, he was wearing a Germs and a Ramones pin, we knew we had the same music interest, so right than we started to put a band together.
The rest is history, we did 3 albums, and was on many comps. Grand theft Audio released all 3 Anti albums on to 1 CD in 1995. ANTI played many shows from 1980 to 1984. We recently did a few re-union shows in 1995. I have put to put together a new line up this year and tour with a new CD. Please stay Tuned.
