Kameron “Kam†Houff Biography
“I live for the Music and Song.†This would become something of a code of arms for Kameron (Kam) Houff. Kam sang in the choir throughout his years in high school and started his own band at fourteen years of age. It was at this time that he decided to write his own songs as well as collaborate with the other band members. With the end of high school came the dissolution of the band, and then a new beginning. It was the summer of 1993 when Kam net Scott Storch and Chuck Treece. Together, they formed a group called “Madd Cropâ€. Upon completion of recording a three song demo, the group signed with RuffHouse Records. The idea behind “Madd Crop†was to combine Hip-Hop, Soul, and Pop. Such a combination was revolutionary at the time; they were ahead of the game. Today, this synthesis of genres has become mainstream, but Kam’s group was one of the first to experiment with this combination. The Madd Crop experience was a preview of what was to come and left him wanting more.Kam, with Scott Storch, set off on their own course for the next few years as in-house writers and producers at Sigma Sound in Philadelphia. It was during this time, while writing with Scott, that Kam began to hone his skills as an engineer/mixer. Eventually, Scott had a bonafide hit record, “You Got Me†with the Roots, then went on to work with Dr. Dre in Los Angeles for the next three years. Although upset to lose his writing partner, Kam was ecstatic for him and decided to embark on a new venture of his own. Kam built his own studio in Philadelphia and put his hands on the recording/production business, expanding his repertoire which had been previously limited to just writing and production. Kam feels lucky to have had the opportunity to do just that when he began working with Ernie Cimadamore, a music industry executive with expertise in marketing and promotion. Together Kam and Ernie formed PEP-SOUL Entertainment to develop and produce great music. This experience was especially valuable to Kam as he continued to learn and develop an in-depth understanding of the record business. One year into Pep-Soul with Ernie, Kam received a phone call from Scott Storch and received an opportunity to go out to Los Angeles and to be part of his team. The original intention was for Kam to write and help with vocal production. In reality, he did all of this and more as Kam became the main engineer and mixer for Scott.Kam went on to write, record, and mix records that created sales in excess of 20 million worldwide. The record Kam co-wrote with Scott Storch and Ne-yo, “Let Me Love Youâ€, held the number one position on the Billboard Hot 100 for 9 weeks, R&B / Hip-Hop charts for 11 weeks, and the European chart for 13 weeks.
