When does it all start? When a four-year-old slaps on the Superman blue-and red and grabs a toy guitar? When a kid sits through tabla lessons at age seven? When a bloke straight out of college hits a console for the first time? Close to two decades later, that kids dream of musical super powers has translated into an ongoing reality. Ash has been right there, living it, every step of the way.
His drive led to a memorable stint as a DJ that spanned a decade. It started at his home town, Calcutta, at Anticlock and the momentum took him to Mumbai where Deep Pranaya a fusion electronic act was born. The decks called him back home to Calcutta where he helmed banging nights, once again, at his alma mater Anticlock. His career was moving like quicksilver, and he beat the hoards to win the 1999 DMC World DJ Regional Finals. That winning streaks impetus took him overseas, to The Diamond Club Dubai the Gulfs biggest club where he scored a residency. Ash shared the stage with some huge names - Boy George, Brandon Block, Greame Park, Enzo (Bedrock), Matt Rowan, among others.
2004 then saw him move to Delhi to start the next leg of his journey. He reconnected with Arjun Vagale and Ashvin Mani Sharma; two old friends and fellow musicians and they together, formed Jalebee Cartel Indias answer to raw, real underground. While the collaboration started as an offshoot of the existing Jalebee Productions, the band has over the years plugged electronica with a new tune, one thats blasted over continents. Ash's vocals cut right through microphones, radio stations, the television screen regardless of medium, they resonate. He also juggles live percussions including tablas; those lessons came handy while DJing, making each performance a musical, multi-tasking mash-up. Ash also hosts a spot on Greece's Dance Radio every fourth Wednesday. His style moves through genres that range from tech-house to techno to fresh progressive house. Just ask the stomping crowds that greet him at every gig. The journey's only just begun.
