What is Junk Food?
Junk Food is a term describing food that is perceived to be unhealthy or having poor nutritional value, according to Food Standards Agency. The term is believed to have been coined by Michael Jacobson, director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, in 1972. The term has since become common usage.
Unfortunately we live in an addiction-prone society, but of all the addictions out there, one of the most deadly is one that is most often overlooked & overcooked: junk food. Junk food typically contains high levels of fat, salt, or sugar, and numerous food additives , such as monosodium glutamate and tartrazine; at the same time, it is lacking in proteins, vitamins and fibre, amongst others. This food is usually convenient, tasty, and extremely addictive. The more you eat of this type of food is the more your body will crave for it.
It is popular with suppliers because it is relatively cheap to manufacture, has a long shelf life and may not require refrigeration. It is popular with consumers because it is easy to purchase, requires little or no preparation, is convenient to consume and has lots of flavour. Consumption of junk food is associated with obesity, heart disease, liver diease, candida, diabetes, cancer, strokes, allergies and dental cavities. Low intake of fruit and vegetables is estimated to cause about 19 per cent of gastrointestinal cancers worldwide, about 31 per cent of coronary heart disease and 11 per cent of strokes.
When we eat a chocolate bar, a bag of crisps, or a meal of junk food, we don’t see our arteries clogging with plaque and fat deposits. We don’t feel ourselves gaining weight as our internal organs become fatty and weak, and most of the time; we don’t associate tiredness, anxiety, depression, or skin problems with the junk food we consumed earlier in the day. Even if a youthful metabolism is keeping us from gaining weight, we are consuming huge amounts of highly processed foods, which are not only devoid of nutrition, but are also full of harsh dyes, chemicals, and preservatives that poison our bodies. Deep-fried potatoes have been shown to be highly carcinogenic. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) causes not just obesity but several forms of neurotoxicity. And the list goes on. Even if we’re not getting fat off junk food, we are getting sick.
Ultimately, junk food is not only robbing us of the things we need to be healthy, it is actively poisoning our systems. The more we can stay away from processed, artificial foods, and stick to eating whole, nutritious foods, the more likely we are to lead long, strong, healthy lives.
