UGLY POP RECORDS

I am here for Friends and Networking

About Me

Ugly Pop is really run by The Cat, a mysterious feline with refined taste in fresh cream, raw fish and only the best in punk rock music. I just help out with stuff that requires opposable thumbs or going an hour without a nap.

Newly-revived record label. Sick of pressing LPs, working out exclusive distribution deals, licensing Japanese releases, shifting thousands of records, being responsible for way too much money and all the other headaches that go along with a hobby turning into a business, we're starting from scratch with a new philosophy:

1) We only work with bands that we are already friends with.

2) Mostly 45 RPM singles. Nice picture sleeves too, of course.

3) Memorable songs-- no more thrashing hardcore, as fun as that can be.

4) Limited pressings-- this generally means 600 copies, and once they're gone, they're gone. Not because we're trying to create collector's items or being elitists, but because there's simply no desire for any of this to get out of hand.

All points subject to change at whim, of course.

Out Now:

VANCOUGAR "Naughty" b/w "Temporary Teamwork" 45

The Cat's prediction for 2007: a thousand real cool girls will make stupid boys mixtapes with "Naughty" as the first song. A-side's a timeless, raw garage pop blast guaranteed to stick in your head for months, while the flip's an equally engaging slice of infectious punk rock. UP018 (www.myspace.com/vancougar)

TRANZMITORS Look What You're Doing b/w Teenage Filmstar 45

Debut from this fantastic new Vancouver band features a pair of infectious but powerful power-pop/punk gems sure to dominate your turntable. Members of New Town Animals, Smugglers and Emergency. UP019 THIRD PRESSING OUT NOW

Out Soon:

SHEARING PINX/MUTATORS split LP

Spastic thrash and deceptively chaotic freakout droolery from two bands that stand out in Vancouver's exploding neo-no wave/art-damaged punk scene with a degree of focus and aggression often aspired to but very rarely achieved. UP020 (www.myspace.com/shearingpinx www.myspace.com/mutators)

Out Later:

BIG FUN new LP

All-broad NYC punk rock/power pop in the finest late '70's tradition-- killer harmonies and tuff guitars make for relentlessly catchy songs that still leave a bruise. UP021 (www.myspace.com/ilovebigfun)

More to come.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

TK, Umi, Thelma, Djuna, Radio, Titan, Helena, Sadie, Chloe and Mr Whiskers.

Used to approve pretty much anything music-related that tried to add us, but man some of you have dreadful taste. In the interest of common decency and an unwillingness to participate in the promulgation of bad music, no more hip hop, emo, goth, mallpunk etc adds accepted, sorry.
