About Me

Ori | Center for African Diasporic Culture (www.oriculture.org) was conceived out of love, the love of the people and culture of Africa and her Diaspora. Nefertari Hawthorne and Kemi Amin met as classmates with a shared passion for artistic expression and culture. Hawthorne, an American studies major and Amin a graphic design major, both graduates of San Francisco State University, came together to provide a link between all people of African descent and celebrate their varied yet ubiquitous cultures.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

We believe it is vital for those of African descent to learn about themselves and each other for our collective progress and enrichment. Ori is also interested in sharing our perspective of African Diasporic culture with everyone. In sharing we connect with ourselves and others. Ori aims to have the greatest impact on youth of African descent. By creating a legacy of shared knowledge, culture and tradition we are investing in the well being of future generations.View All Friends | View Blog | Add Comment

Ori, a Yoruba term meaning head in English, carries much more meaning than it’s literal translation. The Yoruba believe that the spirit dwells within the head, which encapsulates a special power, ase, that continually inspires and sustains the creativity manifest in visual performing and applied arts. Hawthorne and Amin pay homage to this belief by christening their organization Ori: Center for African Diasporic Culture. It is Ori’s mission to share and preserve African Diasporic culture. We seek to cover African Diasporic culture in all of its manifestations, from the historical to the contemporary and at times merging the two.Ori: Center for African Disaporic Culture is a sponsored emerging organization of the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA).
