Defining Deepcave is a hard task. Not only does it represent a production company responsible for keeping hip hop alive in Winnipeg during a time when no one else would take the reigns but it represents a record label that plays host to a crew of some of central Canada's most skilled MC's, elite producers and DJ battle champions. Deepcave remains the most active contributor to the once booming Winnipeg hip hop scene embedding it's print on the frozen Canadian praries for years to come.
Since 2003, they've managed to release five albums under the Deepcave moniker building a devoted, almost cult like, following. Deepcave albums have been received extremely well, gaining critical acclaim with reviews and praise in numerous magazines, websites, and bathroom walls. Receiving college/community radio play in Canadian, American and even European cities. Deepcave continues to stride on forward. With raw, energetic captivating stage shows, the Deepcave crew have become highly anticipated in central and western Canada, where they call home. They've performed all over Canada and in select U.S cities, all to a great crowd response.
They continue to gain fans everywhere they venture, most recently touring with legendary New York hip hop crew- the Boot Camp Clik and previously touring with Los Angeles' underground favourite, Awol One of the Shapeshifters. Constantly networking, Deepcave has built a foundation to be reckoned with. Becoming the ''go to hip hopper's'' in their hometown of Winnipeg, they are the ambassdors to out of town and American acts. With collaborations remaining a top priority, they've worked with Canada's finest producers including DJ Moves (Low Pressure, Len), DJ Kutdown(Foultone Records) and Factor (Sideroad Records). Deepcave has also collaborated with MC's such as Brooklyn's Wordsworth (former host of MTV's Lyricist Lounge), Awol One (Shapeshifters crew, Los Angeles), Dope Poet Society (Toronto), and Cee!!!!!!! (Low Pressure, Vancouver) along the way.
Without a single penny of help or investment, Deepcave has single handedly kept the hip hop flame lit in "Pegcity". They have put on Winnipeg's most succesful underground hip hop shows, bringing some of the world's greatest hip hop acts. Since 2003, they've shared the bill with the likes of Method Man and Redman, Masta Ace, Naughty By Nature, Black Moon, Necro, RA the Rugged Man, MNon Phixion, D12, Royce Da 5'9, Joe Budden, Obie Trice, Wordsworth, Sean P, Smiff N Wessun, Souls Of Mischief, Method Man(solo), Living Legends, Ill Bill, Awol One, Zion I, The Grouch, Aceyalone, DJ Craze, Brother Ali, Blueprint, Busdriver(Project Blowed), Swollen Members, The Crest, Eternia, Joe Dub, Subtitle, Josh Martinez, Classified, Sweatshop Union, DL Incognito and many more notable acts. All this, in a time when the only other rap shows in the city were those of watered down mainstream artists put on by rich corporations.
Deepcave, without a doubt, will go down in Canadian hip hop history with what has been accomplished thus far, but keep in mind, this is just the tip of the iceberg. The upcoming year is one of astronomical proportions for the Deepcave crew. In 2008, there is a busy touring schedule ahead, which will see the crew reach out to audiences across the map. With six albums ready to drop throughout the year, including collaborative efforts with Side Road Records, Foultone Records and Dead Indians, the future is looking bright.
One thing's for sure, as the accomplishments and accolades mount up, Deepcave will continue to experience growth beyond their city limits. With so much accomplished in the pre mature ages of the label and business, it will be only a matter of time before true hip hop heads worldwide take notice and Deepcave finally receives its just deserts in the ranks of hip hop's elite.
