About Me

As a WRITER, Jesse Sublett is the author of three mystery novels -- Rock Critic Murders, Tough Baby and Boiled in Concrete -- and a memoir -- Never the Same Again: A Rock 'N Roll Gothic. He also writes frequently for The History Channel, and you may have seen his work in the New York Times, Texas Monthly, the Austin Chronicle and elsewhere. As a MUSICIAN, Jesse Sublett is best known as the leader of THE SKUNKS, often referred to as THE band that put Austin on the rock n roll map.Jesse continues to play in Austin with THE SKUNKS and as a solo performer.JAMES ELLROY, author of LA Confidential and The Black Dahlia, says this about Jesse's last book: "Never the Same Again is a harrowing, wrenching, spell-binding work of great candor and soul. Read it, think with it, dig it."THE AUSTIN CHRONICLE said this about Jesse's band, THE SKUNKS: "Whatever the case may be, chances are if you like loud music and live in Austin, you've been influenced, at least in some small way, by the Skunks."

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: JesseSublett.com
Band Members: When playing solo, Jesse plays usually plays acoustic six string guitar and upright bass. Recently, he's been performing with Jon Dee Graham in a two or three man format, with the two of them drawing from their vast repertoire, concentrating on the darker side. In fact, the act is often billed as JESSE & JON DEE'S MURDER BLUES SHOW. In THE SKUNKS, his bandmates are Jon Dee Graham (guitar) and Billy Blackmon (drums).
Influences: Jesse's writing has been influenced by the hardboiled / noir masters, such as Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett and David Goodis, to name a few. He's recently been studying Greek tragedies by Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. He's crazy about the films Out of the Past, One-Eyed Jacks, Glass Key and Harvey. His songwriting is heavily influenced by the same sources, and also Bryan Ferry, Howlin' Wolf, Willie Dixon and of course, the Rolling Stones.
Sounds Like: Jesse's documentaries have won awards at the Atlanta and New York film festivals. He loves it when people say he reminds them of Bryan Ferry, but they're usually talking about his hair, not his singing. His bass playing has summoned comparisons to the late John Entwhistle, but he insists that is an exaggeration.
