HÃ¥kan Lewin

Håkan Lewin is an alto saxophonist who transcends genres, with his expression firmly rooted in jazz. Håkan and the organist Johannes Landgren have with their music enjoyed great success both in Europe and the US. The duo, Lewin-Landgren will during the coming years collaborate with many interesting international musicians and ensembles. In 2005 Håkan and Johannes were part of founding the organization “Music Against Violence”. Lewin was the recipient of the Christer Boustedt Award in 2007, one of the most prestigious jazz awards in Sweden. He recently began a “transcendence of genres” with the heavy-metal bass player Magnus Rosén and drummer Birger Löfman, who also are members of Music Against Violence.Håkan has during the years played with most of Sweden’s jazz greats such as Arne Domnérus, Putte Wickman, Bosse Broberg etc. He has also played with international stars such as Benny Bailey, Sahib Shihab, Thad Jones, Clark Terry and for many years the Ellington-trumpet player Willie Cook.He played the lead saxophone in Sandvik Big Band and the legendary Gugge Hedrenius Big Blues Band. Those bands toured several times to the US as well as many parts of Europe. In 1987 Håkan was representing Sweden on the European Radio Union Orchestra in Amiens, France. He has also played with the Swedish Radio Jazz Group on various occasions.In the beginning of the 90’s Håkan toured to Estonia and also got to play in the Russian town Nizhni Novgorod. He was one of the inaugural members of the first ever Nizhni Novgorod Jazz Festival. According to the organizers he was the first jazz musician to play there from the West. In spring 1994 he toured with the Estonian piano player Aldo Meristo to Argentina and played at various festivals.
