James Morris (1 Auxy) started attending warehouse parties in 1994 at the Attik in Akron. He immediately fell in love with "the way this music without vocals could be so emotive, the way it brought so many types of people together."The following year Jimmy began buying records at Riff Raff in Akron and at Deep Records in Cleveland. Over the years he has been listening and learning, absorbing the way different DJs play music and the way people react to it.For days on end after the parties, he would practice at home trying to recreate what he had heard. Early Plastikman, Derrick May, and Jeff Mills sets had a big influence on him. "Each one of those guys had such a unique style of working the crowd. I like to think I took a bit from each and crafted it into my own sound and style," he says.A graffiti artist since junior high school, Jimmy took the name he was writting at the time, "1 Auxy," which is short for the Auxidized One, and started DJing under the alias.1 Auxy started performing at smaller parties in the Akron area in 1996-97, opening sets at club nights such as E*Nokia and Interbelt parties that G Force, UPS, and Illstyle threw. By 1999, 1 Auxy was playing out frequently in Northeast Ohio at bigger parties and clubnights and started amassing a rather large, diverse collection of Detroit and Euro/German techno and acid traxx.Around this time he was invited to join the Lovethang Boomin' System, a group of NE Ohio's best house dj's playing records over top of Doug Martin's (a/k/a Hesohi of Imperial Dub, Viva, Rom, Asoteric Records fame) live PA. Adding trace elements of techno to the Live PA added a different feel to the Boomin' System sets and also made 1 Auxy think differently of how techno could be used. The year 2000 took 1 Auxy to Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was almost like starting over for him, he knew no one and had to promote himself all over again from the ground up. He started to reinvent his sound at the time and moved a little further away from the full on banging techno he was playing and started to really incorporate more minimal sounds and house music into his sets.He built a small club night around his new sound in Grand Rapids called "Underground Lounge." He says, "I met some really great people at the time including Kikoman (Deepfried Records) and Lee Curtiss (Kalamari Records), Grand Rapids natives who liked what I was doing and supported [the events]."Shortly thereafter, international booking agent Jack Neilson of Dustraxx Distribution in Chicago set 1 Auxy up with a weekly Friday residency at Red Dog in Chicago called "Funktion." Funktion ran for one year and had quite a buzz about it as they were doing primarily techno at a venue known famously for house.1 Auxy moved back to Ohio in 2004 where he noticed that things were different, there were less parties. As he was still intent on playing out, he began playing club nights more frequently. Reconnecting with the Lovethang crew, 1 Auxy started up a series of rooftop parties called "Techno Ate my Brain" above the Lime Spider and under the stars in Akron. This series of events lead him into a good relationship with Paul "Random(seed)" Swetz and Andy James (Berretta Music,Detroit). "Tek-know?" was formed shortly thereafter.Today 1 Auxy concentrates on playing mostly minimal house and techno. He decided it was time to go beyond DJing into the realm of music production. In correllation to his sound, he recently further minimized his moniker from "1 Auxy" to "1a_" for production work. Under the new alias he has facilitated throwing events and has opened up for Sleeparchive, Andy Vaz, T-1000, Sassmouth, and other talented regional and national artists.1 Auxy and Tek-know? have recently taken over the longest-running weekly in Northeast Ohio, now called "Re(vision)," a night focused on exposing people to the newest sounds in EDM be it minimal techno, house or drum and bass.More recently, 1 Auxy has been focusing on the 'Truckstop Tourist' project that he and fellow dj/producer/roommate Andy James have developed. Truckstop Tourist is Andy James laying down his own minimal production as well as the most current songs being released...all live utilizing Abbleton and other software. 1 Auxy spins classic minimal, house, and techno over top of the PA creating what is an amazing blend of techno. Listening to a Truckstop Tourist set you will hear all of your favorites warped into the newest sounds in techno...this act is a constant build from start to finish.Currently working on production under the name 1a_ , 2008 will see the inaugural releases of his record label "Factor Fiction," showcasing his take on the minimal house sound. In addition, it will also feature collaborations such as 'Truckstop Tourist' and other Tek-know? artist collaborations as well.
