I’m interested in how power is manifested through symbols and icons that represent a larger entity and group of people. These symbols and icons begin their cultural and religious context through their historical associations, experiences, and relationships. They become unspoken and silent leaders of what they represent, secretly implying the hybrid nature of its cultural context. The formal qualities in a flag are not unique to its ownness, but a mixture of elements deriving from many historical and cultural ties. A column, a pagoda, a skyscraper, and obelisk are united to refer to a harmony across cultures to create something spiritual and larger than oneself. The relationships between symbols and icons become translated, manipulated, distorted to transcend and establish new forms of power often alluding to an emergence of another culture, a new community. Through my art I maneuver through and across these forms, arranging set symbols and icons, assembling and manipulating them to take on new meaning. Plain White myspace layout
