Music and poetry have always filled my life, starting with my childhood home: my dad ripping up the piano or guitar and my sisters and I singing along. We would have planned music-making family gatherings. I began playing the piano when I could barely reach the damper pedal. My tiny fingers started with the standard Chopsticks and Heart and Soul. Watching my father play I began to expand and was soon wowing our Country Baptist Church. Playing the piano by ear came naturally to me, and soon my parents put me into lessons. I had always been a poet but now with an instrument to back me up I found myself slowly but surely….a songwriter. In my early teens I became part of an a cappella Southern Gospel Trio: Heavenly Harmony. We sang for several years together recording an album featuring three of my original songs. As I matured as a teen I began to bore of the piano, and my dad’s guitar began to look like more fun. With a guitar chord book and a slew of questions to my dad I began making progress. I vividly remember the day I finally mastered bar chords while playing an Oasis song “Married with Childrenâ€. By the time I reached college (ironically on a piano scholarship) I was obsessed with the guitar and exploding with creativity. Most of my music to date was written during this period in my life. After college I came back to Parkersburg, began to play at small venues around town, and became heavily involved in the open mic scene. However life got complicated, open mics began to disappear, venues started closing down, and my gigs took the back burner. With new material and a new venues popping up around town, I’m back and raring to go.
