About Me

Healing has always been a passion for Ramesh Kannan. Growing up in a musical household, the healing power of music was introduced to him at a very young age. His mother, being an accomplished Indian Carnatic singer started him on tabla drums at the age of 8. From there, his musical journey has lead him to learn various percussive instruments including but not limited to drum set, djembe, dumbek, didgeridoo, and many melodic instruments including guitar, bass, and voice. Tabla remains to be Rameshs discipline and focal instrument.Ramesh started his professional musical career at the age of 17. At the time, living in his hometown of Philadelphia, PA, Ramesh became a well-respected figure in the artistic and musical community, collaborating with local singer songwriters, jazz musicians, and orchestras. He had the honor to be a part of Phillys own 16-piece percussion orchestra Spokenhand (www.spokenhand.org). During this period, he had the opportunity to tour the country giving performances and workshops at a multitude of venues, universities, and festivals around the country. It was always the healing aspect of music that has fueled Rameshs passion as a musician. Wanting a more hands on experience to healing, Ramesh learned the art of healing touch at the Baltimore School of Massage, and is now a nationally certified massage therapist. During this period he collaborated with some local Washington DC musicians and with the assistance of Wynne Paris, a local and national figure in the kirtan world(www.wynneparis.com), began playing kirtan (devotional Indian music) at healing centers, yoga studios, and temples. It was at these venues that he felt he could harness and connect with a universal energy that makes the music come alive. This realm of music and healing sparked an interest to dive deeper into the world of healing, and has caused him to pursue the study of Traditional Chinese Medicine.Ramesh has had the opportunity to play with a multitude of internationally renowned artists including Zakir Hussain (tabla virtuosos), Krishna Das (kirtan wala), Rennie Haris (renown dancer/choreographer), and Rick Allen (drummer of legendary rock band Def Leopard). He currently resides in Santa Cruz, CA, While earning his degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Five Branches Institute, he spreads his healing work by giving tabla lessons, performing and offering therapeutic massage services to the local community
