Sabicas was born Agustin Castellon, the son of gypsy parents, in Navarra Spain. By the age of nine he was performing in theatres in Madrid, and by the age of twenty he was considered a genius of flamenco guitar. It was then that he revolutionized the flamenco guitar as a solo instrument in it's own right and not just a musical background for flamenco dancing and singing. He created his own style of guitar playing and was so inventive that he opened a new era for flamenco guitar. In 1959 he performed for the first time a true solo flamenco concert in New York.
