In late 2006, Randy Franklin (of the Charlotte, NC band Crisis ) invented a brilliant idea. Being a long-time fan of Charlotte's "fab four," the Spongetones , and seeing other tribute shows being put on, Randy decided a tribute show for the 'Tones was way past due. Approaching other people about the show, and getting positive feedback, he decided to put the plan into action. After lots of thought and hard work, the show was a brilliant success! The participating bands included:
Don Dixon ,
Mitch Easter,
Cruis-O-Matic ,
DeAnna Lynn ,
Crisis ,
Big Bus Dream ,
James Deem ,
Carl Rosen ,
Leisure McCorkle ,
Cool King Chris ,
The Sammies ,
The Saving Graces ,
Bryan Shumate ,
& Mego Dirge .
The event is took place at The Alley Cat , one of Charlotte's newest and nicest hot spots. With room for well over 600 people, hard wood floors, and a good-sized stage (and, of course, food from the Penguin Grill ...who can resist?), this is an ideal place to hang out for lunch, dinner, bar-time, live music, and dancing. In addition to all the excitement, WCNC's Larry Sprinkle was the emcee for the night, and city councilman Andy Dulin presented the 'Tones with a proclamation from the city, signed by the mayor, announcing October 6th "Spongetones Day" in Charlotte!
***UPDATE:***
We've finally posted some official pictures from last weekend's sensational Spongetones Tribute Show at the Alley Cat in Charlotte! All photos are by expert photographer Mike Grohs . They can be found on Liv's personal page in their own album, and here on the show's page in their own album as well.
Thanks to EVERYONE who came out and helped make this night one for the records in NC music history.
