Jahmaal Miller better known as Tiggo aka Da Dipped was born in Los Angeles but raised in San Francisco, Calfornia. Like many of his peers, life was difficult growing up; but he credits the support of a strong family unit to the person he has become today. “I had a rough upbringing. I went through a lot as a child and grew up as a very quiet young man. But both my mother and father taught me well. My uncle Billy (R.I.P) played the piano by ear and my brothers watched Yo MTV RAPS every day when I was a little boy. I think it sparked something in me.â€
Outside of a strong familial core, his musical influences are a testimony to the many places he’s called home along the Golden State including E-40, San Quinn, Tupac, Keak Da Sneak and Mac Dre. Taking a cue from veterans such as Jay-Z, Tiggo also names himself and his life experiences as a source of motivation and inspiration. “I don’t follow trends, but my sound is a mixture of all my favorite artists. I try to paint a picture through my lyrics. I’m very diverse in my style while a lot of people limit themselves to one type of rap. For me, the sky is the limit.â€
The young MC didn’t start rapping seriously until 2002 after moving from San Francisco to settle in Sacramento where he began writing rhymes in class With Friend Twooko during his junior year of high school. After hearing a recording of his voice on a song, Tiggo was officially hooked. “That has to be my favorite memory in music. It was crazy, like is that me?†Shortly thereafter he and group member Twooko Da Boi Created A Group Called The Getto Giants, eventually teaming up with super producer Authentk in 2004. The group enjoyed a 5 year stretch until Twooko’s death in 2007.
His group mate’s untimely passing only gave Tiggo the resolve to put a sense of urgency behind his music. “Recording helped take me away from everything I was going through and the writing helped me express myself as an outlet to speak upon my experiences, most of which I never got a chance to talk about to anyone,†says Tiggo about music’s cathartic quality. That drive eventually led to local Sacramento rythmic station KSFM 102.5 to air his single “Bouncin on Ma Back†to much fanfare, and even spawned a slew of performances from the central valley to the Bay Area. “I love performing. It gives me a rush that I can’t even explain. Ain’t nothing like hearing people recite my raps.†With a buzz building, Tiggo and Producer Boss Decided To Create the Hardline Movement at the end of 2007.
In 2008, they collaborative released the mixtape Too Wet Crew Vol. 1 that featured standout tracks such as “Keeper,†“Rep My Block,†and “Too Playa†which received a warm response from local DJ’s. Since then, Tiggo has been busy working on several projects, including putting the finishing touches on his solo, yet untitled debut album and mix tape. His goals for his music are humble but ambitious enough: “I plan on being a successful independent artist and, God willing, own my own record label one day. I’m just trying to become the best man I can be and be able to one day take care of my own family while making music my listeners can relate to. That’s what I do it for; I’m trying to touch people.â€
And he’s on the right path. Through trial and tribulations, Tiggo aka Da Dipped has persevered and remained positive while never losing sight of how he was first inspired by two older brothers and an uncle who exposed him to the art form. “Music to me is a way of expressing one’s self through rhythm and melody. I do it because I have a passion for lyricism and a love for inspiring others through word play and concepts. My listeners can relate to the music I make, and that’s why I do it: to touch people.â€
