Neighbours is an Australian soap opera that started broadcasting in Australia in 1985 on Seven Network and is produced by FremantleMedia Australia. It involves us in the lives of the residents of Ramsay Street originally revolving around the everyday lives of the Robinsons, the Ramsays, the Clarkes and of course the Mangels. The show started broadcasting in the UK in 1986 on BBC1. Neighbours is also broadcast in New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, Belgium, Kenya Iceland and Norway. It has also previously been broadcast in New York City, Canada, Germany and Cyprus.
Neighbours is recorded in Melbourne and Pin Oak Court in Vermount South is used for the outdoor shots to represent the fictional Ramsay Street. Interior scenes are taped at Global Television Studios in Forest Hill.
At the end of it's first series, Seven Network decided to cancel Neighbours due to poor figures. Ten Network immediately picked up the show and worked hard to revamp the soap and advertise it. They introduced us to the likes of Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan. In the 1990s Neighbours also introduced us to the Kennedy family consisting of Susan Kennedy (played by Jackie Woodbourne), Karl Kennedy (played by Alan Fletcher) and their 3 kids Mal, Billy and Libby. Alan Fletcher has also written, performed and sung a couple of songs about Neighbours such as "Who the f*ck is Susan?" and "I've Got A Crush on Susie K".
In 2007 Neighbours underwent a major revamp due to poor viewing figures in Australia. It went back to basics with the storylines rather than continuing with sensationalism. By end of 2007 it managed a modest boost of audience figures to around 800,000.
In May 2007 the BBC announced on the One O'Clock News that they were pulling out of negotiations for Neighbours due to their asking price of £300 million over 3 years for the episodes - three times the amount previously paid by the BBC. The same day it was announced that Five had won the rights to the UK broadcasts and Neighbours started on Five on 11 February following a blaze of publicity by the network. Between Five, Five Life, Fiver and Fiver+1 each episode of Neighbours is screened a total of 10 times by the company.
