RHYS MILLER
Moments
As of this writing, Rhys Miller is best known in Ohio and Atlanta since that is where he has most frequently performed. But the smooth-toned singer will certainly be attracting a national audience soon with the release of his debut recording. His voice is both strong and inviting. It is difficult not to be impressed with not only the power that he shows during his entrance on “A Day In The Life Of A Fool†(which is worthy of Will Downing) but the warmth that he displays and the understanding that he gives the lyrics.
On Moments, which features Rhys’ memorable singing on five selections, he is accompanied tastefully by a rhythm section that includes pianist Jackie Warren, bassist Clayton Wright, drummer Ron Godale and a few guests. Rhys’ long tones on “Sometimes I Wonder Why†really convey the meaning of Mack David’s lyrics, he gives a fresh take to Michael Franks’ “Tell Me About It,†and he introduces his own emotional original “The Hours.†A special highpoint is his version of Chick Corea’s “ Spain ,†hinting at Al Jarreau’s famous rendition while making the song sound fresh and new.
With the current shortage of young male jazz vocalists, the arrival of Rhys Miller on the scene is a very welcome event. A versatile singer who ranges from swinging to soulful and bluesy (and sometimes all three at once), he clearly has a great future ahead of him. Moments is an important step forward for Rhys Miller.Scott Yanow, Author of ten jazz books including The Jazz Singers, Trumpet Kings, Swing, Jazz On Film and Jazz On Record 1917-76"RHYS MILLER'S SOUND IS WARM AND INVITING
