Once upon a time, there was a little boy who lived in a small town somewhere in the south pacific. The little boy spent his days in wide open spaces, swinging from trees and having a good time. He hadn't a care in the world.
But one day there came a great danger into the land and the little boy and his family had to flee into the cold north.
There, between grey concrete buildings, it was cold; friendly faces were scarce and the little boy wished himself back into the joyous days of his past, made to seem even brighter by the rose coloured stained glass of his memory.
Inside his mind he could go anywhere he wanted, and while the world outside forced him farther and farther into himself, he tried to build something there: A sanctuary, a place where everything was home. He clung to what he had learned in the past, but the troubles seemed to grow around him like a hedge, sealing out even what little light ever made it to the northern land. But inside this little world of his, he was the prince. Destined to rule the sunlit lands with the palm trees and sand.
He ruled over this place with an iron hand, and all the figures he had wished into life served him with dedication. But he knew that all they were, were hollow and lifeless illusions that would bring nothing but an even more splendid isolation.
And one day (it was a sunny day, but he couldn't tell because of all the hedges)...one day he realized that he couldn't pull life out of himself, and any world he could create could never truly be alive.
If he was honest, he had known this all along. He wasn't stupid, you know. So he stopped living there. And then he found that the real world wasn't such a bad place to live.
Not all the time, anyway.
